If you’re looking for a hotel in La Châtaigneraie, your interests can help shape your choice of accommodation. The town combines cultural and historical points of interest with a family trail and activities related to swimming, cycling and well-being. The details distinguish between sights, events and activities, so you can plan your stay around what matters most to your trip.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church: architecture and furnishings

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church is a 60-metre-long neo-Gothic building, with vaults reaching a height of 15.50 metres. The current building stands on the site of the former Saint-Jean castle chapel, which became the parish church. The large transept windows were made by Meuret-Lemoine in 1873. The windows along the north side aisle are by Gaudin and were completed in 1946. The organ also has its own history: it was made by Louis Debierre, came into use in early 1902 and was restored in 1982. The building’s design, windows and organ thus reflect different stages in the history of the church and its furnishings.

Villa Lionnet and the Vendéthèque

Félix Lionnet had Villa Lionnet built in 1874. It was designed by Edmond Guillaume, an architect at the Louvre. The villa and its interior paintings are listed as French historic monuments. The entrance depicts the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, as seen from the island of Capri. The viewpoint is part of the image: the landscape is shown from Capri’s perspective. Guided tours of the villa are offered in collaboration with the tourist office, including summer tours and openings during Heritage Days. Check the dates for your travel period.

The Vendéthèque is a local cultural institution and a branch of the Vendée Department Library Directorate. Its 140-square-metre exhibition space accommodates a variety of cultural exhibitions. The auditorium has 58 seats for cultural events. Admission to exhibitions and attendance at events are free. If you’d like to include an exhibition or event in your stay, the current programme can help you plan; check the dates that match your travel dates.

Facilities may change during renovations or expansions, so check what is currently available in advance. Spa Marinélys offers facial and body treatments, a traditional Oriental hammam and a whirlpool bath. Before making specific plans, check which treatments and facilities are currently available.

Cycling routes and local offerings

The two circular cycling routes have different reference points: the La Châtaigneraie–Pouzauges loop starts in La Châtaigneraie. On the Vouvant–La Châtaigneraie loop, the final section follows a former railway line towards La Châtaigneraie. The routes do not share the same starting or ending point; check the conditions on each route before setting off.

Le Comptoir des Vins offers themed workshops on wine tasting and grape varieties. As dates should be checked before your trip, it’s worth looking at the latest information. The La Châtaigneraie market offers fruit, vegetables, meat and fish; dates and vendors may change. Here, too, current information can help you plan your visit.
