Challans lies in the heart of the Marais Breton Vendéen. A range of themes come together here for a stay: food traders in the covered market halls, architectural history from medieval heritage to 19th-century buildings, and local leisure activities. You can plan your trip around a market visit, heritage, exercise or an event date.

Market Halls and Trading History

Food traders operate in Challans’s covered market halls five days a week. If you’re planning a market visit, check the opening schedule before you travel.

The Quincaillerie Bailly building preserves evidence of Challans’s trading history; its surviving staircase bears witness to its former commercial uses.

Architectural History and Heritage

The Romanesque-inspired Coudrie Chapel is classified as a Monument historique. It dates from the 12th century and was altered in the 15th century. It is also the last surviving remnant of a former Templar commandery built in 1130.

The bell tower of Challans was built between 1862 and 1865 and remained standing after the old church was demolished in 1899. Notre Dame Church is Neo-Gothic and was built from 1897 onward. Fourteen pink granite columns support the choir and nave. Coudrie Chapel dates back to the 12th century, while Notre Dame was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1897 onward.

The Manoir de la Coursaudière was built in the early 17th century. The Garage Moderne building has a mosaic façade designed by architect Marcel Naleau and created by artist Isidore Odorico. The Challans heritage trail is 4.8 km long; this distance gives you a concrete idea of the route when planning a heritage-focused visit.

Leisure and Events

At the Parc de loisirs de la Sablière, the orienteering course has 41 markers distributed throughout the park. The fitness trail has a workout station between the two children’s playgrounds. Course details and facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

Another activity in Challans is a disc golf course with nine target baskets. This means that, in addition to the facilities at the Parc de loisirs de la Sablière, there are dedicated target baskets for this leisure activity.

Autrefois Challans’s 2025 summer programme included four Thursdays featuring an old-fashioned fair in the town centre of Challans. If you’re planning to attend an event like this, check the programme for your travel year; dates may vary from year to year.

The GO Challans GO tourist office holds the national Accueil Vélo label. As its accreditation may change, check its current status in advance if needed.
