Cugand can be explored through the history of the Sèvre Nantaise and the traces left by former industries. The Moulin à Foulon, the succession of uses at La Feuillée and several historic buildings provide a tangible context for wool processing and the use of the river. For planning your trip, you can also consider the Les Diligences circular route and seasonal activities at the canoe-kayak center. This offers a choice of different focuses: cultural history, a hike or bike ride, and activities on the water.

Mills and Wool Processing

The Moulin à Foulon de Cugand is a working fulling mill and a testament to the river’s hydraulic power being used for wool processing. The site includes a restored fulling mill and a dye works; information explains Cugand’s wool-processing tradition. This gives you a tangible way to learn about an industry that also played a part in the history of the Sèvre.

The Moulin à Foulon is freely accessible and equipped with explanatory panels and markers. The stated visit time is 45 minutes. Check current seasonal access before your visit. The time estimate provides a useful guide when planning your stay.

River History and Historic Sites

The Sèvre Nantaise runs through Cugand-la-Bernardière. Since the Middle Ages, its flow has been harnessed to produce flour in mills, as well as for spinning and tanning. This places the fulling mill within a longer history of craft and industrial uses of the river.

La Feuillée successively housed a grain mill, a paper mill, a spinning mill and a tannery. This sequence shows how industries at the site changed: the grain and paper mills were followed by spinning and tanning. The last spinning mill in Cugand closed in 1985.

The Pont d'Arsenal is also a historic landmark; it was built before 1740. The Grotte de Lourdes in Cugand was created on the banks of the Sèvre as a replica of the grotto in Lourdes, after a vow was made during the Second World War. It was inaugurated at Easter in 1948.

Circular Route and Seasonal Activities

Les Diligences is a 5 km, very easy circular route for hiking and cycling. It starts at the car park of the Pierre Stepanovsky sports complex in Cugand. The circular route, distance and stated difficulty provide useful guidance when choosing a walk or bike ride.

The Base de canoë-kayak Cugand rents out canoes, stand-up paddleboards and boats. It also offers lessons and welcomes groups. The activities are seasonal; check the current operating period before your trip. This allows you to include water activities in your plans without treating them as equivalent to a visit to the historic sites or a trip along Les Diligences.
