Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin offers several highlights for a stay: the architectural history of the Église de la Sainte-Trinité, the Geoffroy d’Estissac Priory, the Château de la Rivière and its park, and trails in the Marais. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether sacred architecture and art, gardens or a hike should take priority. Each theme offers a different impression of the town and its landscape.

Church and art: building phases and a painting

The Église de la Sainte-Trinité was completed in 1158 and served as the priory’s chapel. Its Gothic choir dates from the 13th to 14th centuries and features a rib vault. The dates make the different building phases clear: the church was completed before the period in which the Gothic choir was built. The vault is a distinct architectural feature of the choir. If you are interested in church architecture, you can consider the building date and design together, rather than reducing the church to a single date.

The Église de la Sainte-Trinité also houses a Deposition from the Cross painted on canvas by Pierre II Besnard of Angers in 1685. The work adds another point of interest to the building’s history: while the dates help place the development of the church and choir in context, the painting draws attention to religious art. When planning around your interests, you can consider architecture and the artwork as two distinct aspects of a visit to the church.

Geoffroy d’Estissac Priory and the municipal library

Part of the Geoffroy d’Estissac Priory complex has survived. Geoffroy d’Estissac had it rebuilt in 1540. The priory residence features the prelate’s coat of arms and perspective windows. These details add specific architectural features to the historical context. Fully restored by the Vendée Department in 2020, the priory now houses the municipal library. If you plan to visit the library, check access arrangements in advance.

Château de la Rivière and its gardens

The Château de la Rivière includes a 19th-century château and part of the original 16th-century château; both are surrounded by a park. The site thus brings together two building periods: the 19th-century château and a surviving part of the earlier château. These different periods provide a concrete comparison if you are interested in how historic buildings have developed.

The park includes a French garden, an English garden and an exotic garden, as well as wooded areas and meadows. The three garden styles give the park several distinct highlights, while the wooded areas and meadows add further landscape features. Interest in the Château de la Rivière therefore extends beyond its architectural history to the park’s different components.

Walking trails and the landscape of the Marais

Walking trails lead from the Lavoir towards the Marais. The “La Corde” circular trail starts in Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin and is a 14-kilometre walking route through the Marais Poitevin. At the beginning of the route, you can discover a Romanesque bridge over the Corde. The route’s length gives you a clear point of reference for planning your hike; the bridge adds a distinctive architectural feature along the way.

Another landscape highlight is the Réserve des Huttes, a wet marshland between Nalliers and Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin. Its features include ditches and canals, flooded meadows, hedgerows and paths. This offers different options for planning an outing: “La Corde” is a named circular walk with a specified length, while the Réserve des Huttes is a landscape area between two municipalities, characterised by a variety of wetland features.
