La Boissière-De-Montaigu – Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in La Boissière-De-Montaigu
La Boissière-De-Montaigu combines historic buildings with hiking trails and Lac de la Bultière. This offers several ways to plan your trip: explore the architectural history of the commune, choose one of the described routes or set aside time at the reservoir. Events and offerings at the local library are also part of the town’s cultural life.
Châteaux, manor houses and church architecture
The main construction phases of Château d’Asson span the 15th to the 18th century. The château is privately owned and partly protected as a historic monument. The protection designation, registered on 1 April 1986, covers the façades and roofs of the château and the pavilion of the former château, the chapel and the landscaped park. The information about the scope of protection and construction phases describes different aspects of the estate’s history.
Logis de la Fortécuyère also brings together several periods: the privately owned estate includes an old house dating from the 15th century, while the logis and its pavilion have a 17th-century appearance. In 1741, the wife of Charles François Le Jay de Mianne had a chapel built there. Logis La Rallière is another example of the commune’s architectural history and dates from the 16th century.
In the town centre stands the neo-Gothic Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, with its 50-metre-high bell tower. The main masonry was completed in 1916. The stained-glass windows were then installed in several stages between 1918 and 1929; the 1929 windows in the side aisles depict the seven sacraments. The church is open to the public during the day. Check local access information before visiting.
Hiking trails and cycling route
The Les Logis circular hiking trail starts at Place de la Mairie and is marked in yellow. It follows sunken lanes past the former manor houses of the lords of La Boissière, offering a way to explore the commune’s historic heritage. The La Bultière hiking trail starts at the Fortécuyère car park and is marked in black and with ENS (Espace naturel sensible). As trail markings may change, it is a good idea to check them locally before setting out.
The Les logis en pleine nature cycling route offers a different perspective. It starts and ends at Place de l’Église and passes four private estates: the 15th-century Château d’Asson, the 16th-century Logis de la Raillière, the 15th-century Logis de la Fortécuyère and the 16th-century Logis de la Mazure in Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu. A short section of the route runs alongside Lac de la Bultière. The estates mentioned are privately owned; the route connects their names and architectural history without requiring a visit to the estates.
Lac de la Bultière and activities
Lac de la Bultière is an artificial reservoir covering 72 hectares in the communes of La Boissière-De-Montaigu and Chavagnes-en-Paillers. It is part of the commune’s natural heritage. The approximately 12 kilometres of hiking trails should be considered separately: this figure refers to the commune’s trail network, not only to paths by the lake. Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the Base nautique de la Bultière. Check current operating conditions before setting out.
Events and library
La Saint Glinglin takes place every two years at Bois des Brosses. The festivities include costume parades and floats made by the residents themselves. Also held every two years, Décors de rues transforms the town with historic façades and former shops styled to evoke times past. The Canasson Festival is a weekend concert event at Bois des Brosses, organised by the local association SONID’ART. If one of these events is important to your stay, plan around its scheduled dates.
For a quieter cultural experience, you can visit the Bibliothèque de La Boissière-De-Montaigu. It offers more than 3,000 books, as well as monthly reading sessions for babies and themed evenings. The cultural offering thus ranges from historic buildings and special events to regular activities at the library.
