Manor Houses, Museums and Local History
The Manoir de la Chevillonnière is a country manor dating from the early 15th century. It was expanded in the second half of the 15th century. Inside, the plasterwork, traces of painted decoration and original interior features have been preserved. Its history of construction therefore includes an early core and a later extension; the surviving interior details add to the picture of this historic building.
Two museums focus on different subjects. The Musée „Ici le temps s’est arrêté“ displays vehicles and everyday objects from various periods between 1886 and 1980. These exhibits provide different ways to explore the period they represent. The Musée des Outils d’Antan is devoted to agricultural tools and tools from the many trades that once shaped village life. The historical interest thus ranges from vehicles and everyday objects to tools from rural working life.
The church is also connected with a local tradition: its bell tower, perched on a hill, is said to have served as a navigational landmark for sailors before the Vendée marshes were drained. This account is presented as a local tradition. In the hamlet of La Roulière, near the Petit Lay, you will find the birthplace of Henri Adolphe Archereau. In Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis, he is credited with having been the first to illuminate the Place de la Concorde in Paris electrically.
Hiking and Exploring the Vouraie
The Sentier de la Vouraie runs around the lake, with loop options of 15.8 and 12.7 kilometres. The trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. The two stated distances make it possible to compare the route lengths, while circling the lake is the shared goal of both options.
The Sentier des Bruyères offers a shorter designated route: this 6.1-kilometre hiking trail is rated easy and starts at the Place de la Mairie in Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis. The specific details on distance and route type make it easier to compare trails: here, an easy walk with a fixed starting point is set against the longer options around the lake.
Natural Areas and Special Habitats
The „Vallée de la Vouraie et vallons annexes“ area is a continental type 2 ZNIEFF and includes Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis. The slopes near La Ritaudière are also of particular interest for their insect and plant life. One of the few known locations of Veronica triphyllos in the Armorican Massif is found there.
The wooded valley bottoms of the Vallée de la Vouraie, some of them deeply incised, provide habitat for species including otters and genets. Alongside the designated natural area, the focus is therefore also on specific plant and animal life. If nature is a factor in choosing your destination, you will find information here both on notable locations and on habitats in the valley.
Planning Events and Visits
National driving competitions are held every year in the grounds of the Chevillonnière. If you want to plan your trip around a competition, check the specific dates in advance. This will help you coordinate your visit to Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis with the event date.
The Musée „Ici le temps s’est arrêté“ offers guided tours by prior arrangement from 1 April to 15 October; check the dates before your trip. The Musée des Outils d’Antan is open year-round by prior arrangement. Arrange this visit in advance as well. A geocaching destination in the commune is called „La passerelle de la Javelière“ and adds another specific destination alongside the trails and museums mentioned above.
