Les Essarts offers several different points of interest for a hotel stay: historic buildings, a park in the heart of the town, hiking trails and regular markets. This lets you focus on architecture, time outdoors or a visit on a market day.

Culture and Architectural History

The grounds of the Château des Essarts feature ruins such as the Saracen Tower and remains of the former defensive walls. Also on the site are the former 14th-century Châtelet and the former Renaissance château. This brings together several parts of the complex: remnants of fortifications, a Châtelet with a specific date, and a château from the Renaissance.

The Church of Saint-Pierre adds a distinctive architectural feature. It is a Romanesque church with two bell towers, unique in the Vendée. If you are interested in Romanesque architecture, its combination of style and twin towers is a particular reason to include the church in your plans for the town.

Park, Walks and Hiking Trails

Parc Saint Michel is in the heart of Les Essarts and covers six hectares. The park includes a manor house, a small retention pond and a wet valley. It is well suited to family walks. These architectural and landscape features offer different points of interest along the way; the park can also be planned as a destination in its own right for spending time outdoors.

The Sentier de l’Ansonnière is an easy, 18-kilometre hiking trail with a stated duration of about 4 hours and 15 minutes. It starts at the parking area at La Capéterie, next to the cemetery near the town centre, and is marked in yellow. The approximate duration adds useful context to the distance when planning your day: you can consider both figures together rather than looking only at the number of kilometres.

Along the way, the trail passes, among other places, the Vieux Château, the Logis de Grezay and the Moulin de l’Ansonnière. The route therefore takes in several cultural heritage buildings. The Circuit de la Ferrière aux Essarts offers a different perspective: it winds through cultivated landscapes towards Les Essarts and reaches the town via Parc Saint-Michel. The routes have different points of emphasis: the Sentier focuses on distance, approximate duration, trail markings and buildings along the way, while the Circuit highlights the landscape and its route through the park.

Another outdoor activity is geocaching in Essarts-en-Bocage, with caches in four localities. If you would rather plan an outdoor treasure hunt than a hiking route, this is a different type of activity to consider when planning your stay.

Markets and Local Produce

The Marché des Saveurs takes place on Fridays in odd-numbered weeks, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, at Place du 11 novembre 1918 next to the church. The Foire aux Essarts follows a different schedule: it takes place on the third Wednesday of each month, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, at Place du 8 mai and on Rue Georges Clemenceau. Check the event dates locally before travelling so that your plans match the respective days and times.

Organic producer André Geneviève sells directly from the farm at La Hardière in Les Essarts and also attends the Marché des Saveurs. If you are planning a visit or to attend the market, confirm the contact details and participation in advance.

When choosing a hotel, you can start by setting your travel dates and deciding what to focus on: architecture, walks, hiking and markets each call for different plans. This helps you tailor your hotel search to the kind of stay you want in Les Essarts.
