La Guérinière can be explored through a variety of themes: island history, salt production, dunes, beaches and opportunities to get active. When planning your stay, it’s worth first considering whether you’re mainly looking for cultural insights or prefer spending time outdoors. Each place and activity has its own focus.

Island life, mills and dunes

The Musée des traditions de l'île offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of Noirmoutier’s residents in past centuries. Its exhibits include sections on the navy and salt production, reconstructed interiors of old houses, and an extensive collection of traditional island costumes. The various themes complement one another: the museum links work and everyday life with insights into historic homes and clothing. This means a visit is not limited to just one aspect of the island’s history.

The four “Moulins de la Cour” are also set within a distinctive landscape: they stand on the grey dune. Beyond them, on the way to the beach, lies the white dune. Those interested in the coastal landscape and cultural heritage will find two clearly marked points of reference here—the mills and the sequence of dunes. This offers a different perspective from the museum’s exhibits on historical everyday life.

Beach, views and time outdoors

The sandy beach stretches across Barbâtre and La Guérinière and is 7 km long. It’s suitable for long walks, swimming and water sports. It’s important to note that the full length of the beach belongs to both municipalities, rather than attributing it to La Guérinière alone. The activities mentioned also offer different ways to enjoy the beach: walking along the sand, swimming or taking part in water sports.

Pé de l'Herse is about 23 m high and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. If you’d rather spend time in a forest, you can choose Bois des Eloux for a walk, a picnic or a jog. These options offer different activities: views over the ocean at Pé de l'Herse, and walks, breaks or jogs in Bois des Eloux. No specific route or walking time is implied.

Harbor, cycling and equipment

Port ostréicole du Bonhomme is in La Guérinière, on the Bay of Bourgneuf side. There are oyster huts there, some of which serve as places to buy and taste oysters. The harbor therefore connects its role in oyster farming with opportunities to purchase or sample oysters. Port du Bonhomme is also a stop on the “Nom d'un petit Bonhomme” cycling tour along the cycle route in La Guérinière.

No 2 Roo rents out electric and conventional bicycles for adults, longtail cargo bikes and children’s bicycles. Its range also includes pet trailers, child seats, carts, helmets and baskets. The selection thus ranges from different types of bicycle to additional equipment. When planning, you can first consider whether you need a bicycle or specific accessories; the options listed here vary by type and equipment.

Salt production and regional products

At the Marais salant La Nouvelle Brille, coarse salt, fleur de sel, salicornia and salt-based products are sold directly. An operating season is listed for 2026, and visits are free. Check the latest opening details before you travel. During the visits, each step is explained, from preparing the ponds to the traditional production of coarse salt and fleur de sel.

The visit focuses on the salt-making process, while the direct sales show the finished products. Together with the salt theme at the Musée des traditions, this offers two different perspectives: the museum presents salt production as one part of everyday life in the past, while the visit explains the production process step by step. When looking for a hotel, you can first choose the focus of your stay: cultural and historical themes, time at the beach, or activities on foot and by bike.
