Fougeré combines a strong focus on forests and hiking trails with natural attractions, historic architecture, and an annual summer festival. When choosing a destination for your hotel stay, these themes can help you decide whether Fougeré suits your interests. The main attractions are the Forest of La Chaize and various trails; historic buildings and the Fête de l’Été offer additional reasons to visit.

Forest and Nature in Fougeré

The Forest of La Chaize covers almost a quarter of Fougeré’s area and spans about 600 hectares. The Forest of Fougeré is considered the municipality’s main tourist attraction. The Sentier du Châtaigner crosses one of the few remaining forests in the La Roche-sur-Yon urban area. This offers a chance to experience part of the local landscape along a specific hiking route.

The Forest of La Chaize is considered a refuge for numerous species. The Damier de la Succise, a species protected in France and Europe, can be found there. Picnic tables in the forest invite you to take a break. Alongside the size of the forest, nature watching and a place to rest are other aspects to consider when planning your trip.

Hiking Trails of Different Lengths

The Sentier du Châtaigner is an 18-kilometre hiking trail laid out as a circular route. It starts at the Lande Bonnaud picnic area in the Forest of Fougeré. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. A shorter option is the Parcours ludique et sportif in the Forest of La Chaize: it is 1.2 kilometres long and includes five stations. The distance and format of each route offer concrete points of comparison when planning your time in the forest.

As part of an initiative to enhance the forest and the municipal connecting trails, 80 kilometres of paths were designed, created, and signposted. This provides another measure of the hiking options in Fougeré, alongside the details of the two individual trails. The Sentier du Châtaigner is also associated with the small Château de la Ricotière: the Boucle de la Ricotière passes nearby.

Church, Priory, and Château

The Église Notre-Dame in the town centre was built in 1870 to the plans of departmental architect M. Clair. At Pierre Brune, there is a 19th-century château and remnants of the original enclosing wall of a former priory. The Couvent des Cerisiers is a priory founded in the 12th century that was dependent on Fontevraud Abbey. Its original double-arched portal has been preserved.

These historic landmarks differ both in period and architectural form: they include a 19th-century church, a château, and surviving parts of a former priory. If architectural history is among your travel interests, these places offer a distinct way to explore Fougeré beyond its forests and trails.

An Annual Event in July

The Fête de l’Été takes place every year in July, with a shared meal, music, and fireworks. If you are planning a stay in July, you can take this event into account when choosing your travel dates. Together with the varied trail lengths and historic buildings, it offers a clear selection of themes: forests and hiking, nature, architectural history, or the summer festival. These highlights can help you decide whether Fougeré might suit what you are looking for in a hotel stay.
