La Faute-sur-Mer is a sandy peninsula. It is bordered by the Lay River on one side and the ocean on the other. Its coastline stretches for more than 10 kilometres; the peninsula is no more than 2 kilometres wide. This gives you three specific themes to consider when planning your trip: the coast, protected nature and exploring the peninsula by bike.

Coastal landscape and protected nature

The Réserve naturelle nationale de la Belle Henriette covers 337 hectares, divided equally between La Faute-sur-Mer and La Tranche-sur-Mer. It is an open lagoon whose sandbanks shift over time. This changes the sequence of habitats, which include dunes, mudflats and salt marshes.

A total of 234 bird species have been recorded in the Réserve naturelle nationale de la Belle Henriette. The short-eared owl is observed there during the winter, while the osprey is seen during migration. These observations therefore cover different seasons: winter for the short-eared owl and the migration season for the osprey.

The Pointe d’Arçay is a unique sand spit in the delegated municipality of La Faute-sur-Mer and is classified as a Ramsar site. Its landscapes, wildlife and plant life define the character of this natural area. Visitors may enter the Réserve naturelle nationale de la Belle Henriette by following the designated and marked paths; dogs must be kept on a leash. The Réserve biologique dirigée de la Pointe d’Arçay organises guided tours in summer. Check the dates in advance if you are planning to take one.

Beach activities and exploring by bike

Windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing and land sailing are available along the coast of La Faute-sur-Mer. Activities may vary depending on the season and provider. At Pointe d’Arçay, you can ride a land yacht across the sand between the dunes, forest and ocean. Check availability for your travel dates and the applicable safety requirements in advance.

The Boucle cyclable La Presqu’île is a cycling route that lets you explore the peninsula. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Lay estuary and oyster huts surrounded by shallow purification ponds. This gives you two different options when planning an outing: coastal activities or exploring the landscape by bike.

Market, oysters and when to visit

The Marché de La Faute-sur-Mer takes place every Sunday throughout the year. From April to September, an additional market day is held on Thursdays. The market offers seasonal fruit and vegetables, Vendée specialities, fish and seafood. As weekly schedules can change, check the market days before your visit.

At Les Amourettes, you can taste and buy oysters on site; in summer, there is also an oyster bar on stilts. Tides and seasonal opening may affect opening arrangements. The La Faute-sur-Mer tourist office provides information on beach activities, tides and walks, and offers tickets for various tours and excursions. Its offerings may also change over time.

Find a hotel for your stay

If you are looking for a hotel in La Faute-sur-Mer, you can start planning your trip by matching the character of the area to the activities you have in mind. Those interested in protected natural areas will find the lagoon and birdlife of Belle Henriette, as well as another distinctive landscape at Pointe d’Arçay. For an activity-focused stay, the coastal activities and cycling route are the main attractions. The time of year may also matter: guided tours and the oyster bar are seasonal, while the additional market day takes place from April to September.
