Château-Guibert: Nature, Trails and Culture

Château-Guibert offers plenty to inspire a trip focused on landscapes, trails and cultural sights. A church with a Latin-cross plan

The present-day Notre-Dame de la Nativité church was built between 1892 and 1894 on the site of an older Romanesque church and the adjoining cemetery. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross: a single-nave church with a projecting transept follows the bell-tower portal, and the choir faces south. These terms describe the building’s layout: the nave forms the lengthwise section, while the transept projects to the sides. The church can therefore be viewed both in terms of its architectural history and its spatial form.

Lac du Marillet and nature

The Barrage du Marillet was built between 1983 and 1987. The resulting reservoir covers 127 hectares and holds 7,300,000 cubic metres of water. Near Château-Guibert lies Lac du Marillet, a natural area with several inlets and paths. Its very dry slopes are home to meadows and heathland; the flora has an almost Mediterranean character.

The wildlife is also one of the area’s notable features. Species mentioned include the Eurasian golden oriole, nightingale and kingfisher, as well as the brown longhorn beetle and the emerald damselfly Dryas. This selection includes birds and dragonflies, giving nature lovers specific species to look out for. The landscape and biodiversity thus provide a different focus from the town’s architectural history.

Hiking trails and views

The Sentier pédestre Le Lac du Marillet is a 9.7-kilometre circular hiking trail starting in Château-Guibert and rated easy. Its distance, difficulty rating and circular route provide concrete guidance when choosing a hike. Trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Hedgerow-lined paths define the route of the Sentier pédestre Château d’eau de la Choletière, offering panoramic views of the countryside around Château-Guibert and the Marillet valley. A striking structure along this route is the 50-metre-high Château d’eau de la Choletière. Its conical tank was lifted onto the tower using hydraulic jacks in just three days. While the Lac du Marillet trail is described by its length and difficulty rating, the Choletière trail stands out for its hedgerows, views and the tower’s engineering feature.

Activities with Pieds d’AventureS

Based at La Pinetière in Château-Guibert, Pieds d’AventureS offers donkey treks. Its activities also include a range of options accessible to people with disabilities, including day trips and hiking stays lasting from two to eight days. Workshops and two-day courses focus on discovering bivouacking and bushcraft. The options therefore range from a donkey trek to a day trip or a stay of several days.

Garden, Bellenoue and fishing

A 2015 official garden brochure describes the Jardin de la Morandière as a romantic garden with a collection of 600 rose varieties. Around a bower, a pond and pergolas, it offers a remarkable view over the valley. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting.

Bellenoue in Château-Guibert has a play and picnic area, as well as footpaths around the lakes. At Lac du Marillet, a no-kill black bass fishing area is designated along the Moinie and Tourteron inlets. The Descente à bateau de Bellenoue is a concrete boat ramp at the Barrage du Marillet; it is a separate feature from the lake’s fishing area.
