Curzon: Culture, Water and Marshland
Accommodation in Curzon
Curzon brings together several distinct themes for trip planning: the architecture of the Saint-Romain crypt, the history of the Port-la-Claye bridges, activities on the Petit Lay and the Lay marshland. If you are looking for a hotel in Curzon, you can consider whether cultural history, walking or water sports will be the focus of your trip. Each of these local themes offers its own distinct character.
Crypt, Culture and Architectural History
The crypt of the Church of Saint-Romain has nine groin vaults. Four free-standing columns in the central area and ten columns built into the walls support it. This creates a clearly articulated structure: individual supports stand in the centre, with additional columns along the walls. The capitals of the central columns are also decorated, combining floral motifs with finely crafted volutes. When considering the architecture, it is worth distinguishing the supporting structure of vaults and columns from the decorative embellishment of the capitals.
Cura Bona was inaugurated in 2020 as a cultural space in the restored former Chapelle de l’Orphelinat. A cultural association is associated with Cura Bona. A 2025 municipal council meeting record states that it holds six to seven exhibitions per year. Various artists, including painters and engravers, present their work to the public. This offers a cultural point of interest alongside the architectural history of the restored building.
The Port-la-Claye bridges date from the 18th century and are made of granite. The first bridge spans the municipalities of Curzon, Lairoux, La Bretonnière-La Claye and Saint-Cyr-en-Talmondais. Their context therefore includes both their construction period and material, as well as their connection to several municipalities.
The Lay, Marshland and Walking
The natural meadow of Le Communal is divided by the coastal river Lay. The Curzon side covers 170 hectares, and the Lairoux side 126 hectares. The 296-hectare Communal of Curzon is part of the Parc naturel régional du Marais Poitevin. Curzon also forms part, together with other municipalities, of the Marais Poitevin Natura 2000 site, which is covered by the Ramsar designation.
The “De la plaine au marais” circular trail in Curzon is 9.4 kilometres long and marked in grey. It starts at Place de l'Église. Along Route des Fontenelles, it includes a viewpoint overlooking the marshland. The trail’s length, starting point and markings provide specific details for planning, while the viewpoint adds a particular vantage point over the landscape.
Water Sports on the Petit Lay
On the Petit Lay, the “O' Plaisir de l'Eau” water sports centre in Curzon offers boat, canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals. Availability may vary seasonally, so check what is on offer before your visit.
When choosing between these two nature activities, the difference lies in the type of experience: the circular trail leads to a viewpoint over the marshland, while the water sports centre offers rentals on the Petit Lay. You can therefore treat walking and water sports as separate focuses for your trip planning.
