Saint-Martin-Lars-en-Sainte-Hermine: Church, Trails and Étang
Accommodation in Saint-Martin-Lars-en-Sainte-Hermine
Saint-Martin-Lars-en-Sainte-Hermine offers several starting points for planning a trip: the architectural history of the Église Saint-Martin, hiking and cycling routes, and opportunities to observe nature at the Étang de Saint-Martin. The routes differ considerably in length and mode of travel; at the church, you can follow a cultural and historical trail of your own. This allows you to choose your destination based on your interests without treating a hike, a cycling loop and a pond area as the same thing.
The Église Saint-Martin and its architectural history
The main construction phase of the Église Saint-Martin dates to the 12th and 13th centuries. At the same time, some parts of the building date back further: the Romanesque nave is from the 11th century, and the choir from the late 12th century. These parts of the building reveal different stages in its architectural history.
On 9 March 1987, the church was designated a historic monument by decree. Several centuries separate its medieval construction phases from this formal protected status. Both periods are relevant to understanding the building’s cultural and historical significance: the origins of its architectural components and its later heritage protection.
Explore on foot or by bike
The Les Batailles hiking trail starts at Place de l'Église in Saint-Martin-Lars-en-Sainte-Hermine. The circular hike is 16 kilometres long, rated moderate and marked yellow as a PR trail. The stated average duration is four hours and 30 minutes. This time estimate can help you plan your day; add breaks according to your plans. Check the signs at the starting point, as route information and markings may change.
La Boucle des Vergers is a 33-kilometre cycling loop designated as a Vendée Vélo route. It passes through the municipalities of Saint-Martin-Lars-en-Sainte-Hermine, La Caillère-Saint-Hilaire and La Jaudonnière. Directly compared, this cycling loop is more than twice as long as Les Batailles; the two routes also differ in their mode of travel. This makes it possible to distinguish between them by distance and activity.
Les Batailles crosses the transition between the plain and the bocage countryside and passes through a diverse natural environment. Alongside its length, this gives the hiking route its own connection to the landscape. For navigation, both the yellow PR marking and the information about the circular route are useful; follow the current signs on site.
Étang de Saint-Martin: water, nature and local heritage
The Étang de Saint-Martin is a 2.4-hectare municipal pond created in 1973. A path connects the town centre with the pond, crossing the Theu stream on wooden footbridges.
A spring along a path in the Étang area feeds an old, small washhouse built of dressed stone. If you would like to visit it, check the exact access arrangements when you arrive. Dragonflies and birds can be observed at the pond, although the visibility of different species varies with the season. Cattails, bur-reeds and irises also grow around the small lake.
Every year, the municipality of Saint-Martin and volunteers from the village organise a fishing event at the Étang. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the event dates locally. Nature watching, the small washhouse and the annual event are different reasons to include the pond in your plans; they also make it another point of interest alongside the church and routes.
