Damvix: Hiking and a Water Landscape
Accommodation in Damvix
Damvix offers different ways to experience the landscape: an easy circular walk through the wet Marais poitevin, waterways and structures at Bazoin, and excursions from the Embarcadère de La Grenouille Bleue landing stage. The Église Saint-Guy also adds a building with a clearly identifiable architectural history. Depending on your interests, you can focus on walking, a water-based experience, bicycle rental, or architecture.
Water Landscape at Bazoin
At Bazoin, the Sèvre Niortaise, its tributary the Mignon, the small river Vieux Béjou, and the Nouveau Béjou Canal converge. Four weirs and two locks regulate the waterways and form a complex, still-active water-management system. Both features shape the character of the area: the confluence of several waterways and their technical regulation by weirs and locks.
The Bazoin site extends across Maillé and Damvix in the Vendée department and La Ronde in the Charente-Maritime department. The landscape site therefore encompasses three municipalities in two departments. This boundary defines Bazoin as a landscape area that extends beyond a single municipality.
On Foot on the Circuit pédestre Les Rainettes
The Circuit pédestre Les Rainettes is an easy circular walk starting in Damvix. At 9 kilometers and about 2 hours and 30 minutes, both the distance and an approximate time are specified. These two details answer different planning questions: How far does the route go, and how much time should you allow for the walk? The route passes through the wet Marais poitevin and leads to the Bazoin locks, where several canals converge. The return follows the Sèvre Niortaise, which is lined with traditional houses. The loop thus brings together marshland, water engineering, and riverbanks rather than focusing on just one type of landscape.
Boat Trips and Bicycles
Trips by traditional boats, canoes, and pedal boats are offered at the Embarcadère de La Grenouille Bleue landing stage. Bicycles are also available for rent there. The options differ by mode of transport: on the water, there are three types of boat to choose from, and bicycles can be rented at the same location.
Architectural History of the Église Saint-Guy
The Église Saint-Guy in Damvix was rebuilt in the 1850s by the architect Garnereau. It has a basilica-style floor plan; in 1860, a bell-tower porch was added, with a spire designed by Victor Clair. The sequence distinguishes two construction details: the rebuilding in the 1850s and the addition in 1860. The basilica-style floor plan describes the church’s basic form, while the bell-tower porch and spire identify the later addition. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s form, architect, and chronology. Garnereau is associated with the rebuilding, and Victor Clair with the design of the spire.
