In Tiffauges, you can explore heritage from different perspectives: the site’s history, the fortifications, medieval reconstructions and clockmaking. Walking routes and paths along the Sèvre Nantaise offer their own points of interest. Together, these themes provide practical guidance for planning your stay around your interests.

Château de Tiffauges: site and construction history

The Château de Tiffauges stands on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Sèvre Nantaise. The site has been inhabited since Gallo-Roman times; the Château’s first construction phase dates to the 11th and 12th centuries. These details relate to different aspects: one concerns settlement at the site, the other the beginning of the Château’s construction history. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the site from the origins of the castle.

At its peak, the fortified circuit of the Château de Tiffauges was nearly 780 metres long and included 18 towers. The length of the circuit and the number of towers give two concrete impressions of the scale of the fortifications. For a visit focused on architectural history, they offer a way to consider both the extent and the layout of the complex.

Reconstructions and hands-on activities

The Château houses Europe’s largest collection of working reconstructions of medieval objects. Another hands-on experience is the mini trebuchet, which visitors can cock and fire. At the Château, both reconstructed objects and the chance to take part in an activity are highlights.

The schedule for cocking and firing the trebuchet depends on the opening period. If you want to plan this activity in particular, check when it is offered during the relevant period before your visit. This lets you experience the historical collection and the hands-on activity as distinct parts of the Château visit.

Clockmaking at the Musée de l’Horlogerie

The Musée de l’Horlogerie is housed in a workshop dating from 1898, which has been preserved in its original condition. The collection includes more than fifty clocks, from traditional mechanisms to newer models with electronic components. The focus is therefore on both the workshop as a historic place and the range of clock types on display.

The different mechanisms and models offer a practical introduction to clockmaking: you can compare traditional mechanisms with newer models that have electronic components. Visits are available by appointment. As this arrangement may change, it is best to confirm the appointment before your trip.

Heritage on foot and along the Sèvre

The Balade à Tiffauges is a twelve-part walking route dedicated to the history and heritage of Tiffauges and its surroundings. Its twelve sections give the route a clear structure, with a focus on exploring historical and cultural themes.

The 9.4-kilometre Circuit de Saint Aubin des Ormeaux à Tiffauges follows the Sèvre Nantaise along a greenway and ends at the Château de Tiffauges. The Balade is described in terms of its twelve sections and heritage theme, while the Circuit offers practical reference points in its distance, riverside route and endpoint. Route conditions may change; check the current route and conditions before setting off.

The different details help you understand the character of each option: the Balade focuses on several sections devoted to history and heritage, while the Circuit follows a named route along the Sèvre Nantaise to the Château. When planning your stay, you can combine these experiences with visits to the Château and the Musée de l’Horlogerie, without treating the different formats as if they were the same.
