For a trip to Charente-Maritime, you can focus on nature, outdoor activities or cultural heritage. The options range from large natural areas and walking trails to guided or independent excursions, museums, maritime history and local salt-making traditions. When planning, it helps to first consider which activities you want to shape your days; you can then tailor your regional transport and hotel search to your itinerary.

Natural Areas and Trails

The Échappées Nature network covers 50,000 hectares of fragile and exceptional natural areas. The sites offer special viewpoints, as well as workshops, unusual excursions and events organised by the staff at each location. You can go for walks independently or with a guide. The site teams also offer activities for observing migratory birds.

Charente-Maritime has 5,000 kilometres of walking trails. Other routes run along the ocean and through marshland and forests, with stops in towns and villages. The Route des Cardinaux is a horse-riding route associated with the tracks of D’Artagnan. In the Marais poitevin, you can get around on foot, by bicycle or in a flat-bottomed boat. These offer different ways to explore, from walks and guided nature activities to a horse-riding route or a trip on the water.

Museums, History and Regional Traditions

The Musée Ernest Cognacq presents the heritage of Île de Ré through archaeological, historical, ethnographic and artistic collections. The museum is housed in a late-15th-century mansion protected as a historic monument. It also offers a cultural programme for all audiences. The breadth of its collections makes a visit appealing to travellers interested in exploring different aspects of the island’s heritage.

Brouage is a fortified village in the marshes that once served as a port for the salt trade. In Rochefort, the Corderie Royale is listed as a historic monument and is associated with the manufacture of rope for the Royal Navy. The Musée maritime de La Rochelle preserves a historic maritime fleet of nine ships. These places offer different perspectives on history: Brouage represents the former role of the salt trade, the Corderie Royale the manufacture of rope for the Navy, and the maritime museum the preservation of historic vessels.

Salt and oysters are also regional themes. The salt-marsh traditions of Île de Ré and the Marennes-Oléron area include the hand-harvesting of sea salt by salt workers. Oysters from Marennes-Oléron have IGP status; the Fines de Claires Vertes and Pousse en Claire varieties also hold Label Rouge awards. You can take these traditions into account when planning your trip, alongside nature and culture, without treating them as activities at a single location.

Getting There and Regional Connections

La Rochelle station is served by TGV INOUI, OUIGO, INTERCITÉS and TER. Regional train services run to Rochefort and Saintes; direct trains also operate between La Rochelle and Rochefort. Check the operator and timetable before travelling. Regional buses connect arrival stations with destinations along the coast, making it possible to visit Charente-Maritime without a car. Check routes and operating conditions before your journey.

Bicycles can be carried free of charge on most TER services. However, this depends on available capacity and the regional rules in force; check the conditions before travelling. This information does not automatically apply to any particular train service. If you are planning your days around walking trails, nature activities or coastal visits, regional train and bus connections can be another factor in your travel planning.
