Courçon on the southern edge of the Marais Poitevin

Courçon lies on the southern edge of the Parc du Marais Poitevin. With its cycling route, Romanesque church and weekly market, the town offers different ways to experience the landscape and local life. When choosing a hotel, you might consider whether you plan to spend most of your trip outdoors, explore historic architecture or visit local attractions. The examples below range from a bike ride and architectural history to market days and nature.

Cycling route and digital tour

The marked Circuit cyclable 11 – De coteaux en marais begins at the market square and is signposted as a one-way route. This is an easy 31-kilometre bike ride that takes about three hours. The route passes through landscapes between the plain and the wet marshes. Its length, estimated duration and stated difficulty give you a practical point of reference if you plan to include the bike ride as a separate activity.

EXPLORAMA is a free digital tour that guides visitors through Courçon’s heritage, landscapes and local stories using a smartphone. The launch was announced for summer 2026; check whether the tour is available before your trip. The two activities have different focuses: the Circuit cyclable combines cycling with a marked route, while EXPLORAMA presents culture, landscapes and local stories digitally.

Church and architectural history

Notre-Dame de Courçon was built in 1091 and is predominantly Romanesque in style. Some parts date from other periods: the choir may date from the 15th century, while the upper sections with battlements were renovated in the 19th century. This brings predominantly Romanesque design together with later renovations. The dating of the choir is uncertain. The contrast between its Romanesque character and later alterations makes the church a tangible historical landmark in the town.

Market and Minoterie coopérative

Courçon’s market is held year-round on the market square on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon. Food and non-food products are available. If a market day is important to your plans, check the times before your visit.

The Minoterie coopérative de Courçon brings together architectural history and a practical local connection. The five-storey mill was built in 1927; the Minoterie has been in operation since 1935. A shop in the building is open year-round from Monday to Friday. Check opening hours before your visit. The Minoterie works exclusively with farmers located within a maximum radius of 10 kilometres.

Forest and exercise

The Benon Forest borders Courçon and offers walks in nature. It complements the bike ride with another way to experience the area: the forest is a destination for walks, while the Circuit cyclable passes through landscapes between the plain and the wet marshes. In Courçon, the Parcours de santé et aire de pique-nique has five exercise stations: a push-up bar, obstacle hedges, balance beams, pull-up bars and parallel bars. So, alongside walks and the marked cycling route, the exercise stations offer another distinct activity.
