La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien: Discover Marshland and Heritage
Accommodation in La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien
The municipality of La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien encompasses the Marais de Broue, also known as the Marais de Brouage, as well as the hills of La Gripperie. The village of Saint-Symphorien lies on a low-lying limestone plateau near the former coastline; vegetable growing and woodland shape the landscape. The village’s location and the municipality’s varied landscapes thus serve as distinct points of reference.
Marshland, Plateau, and Nature Reserve
The Marais de Broue and the Marais de Brouage are two names for the same landscape. It emerged around the beginning of the 17th century from a former sea inlet, which was gradually filled in by deposited sediments. Today’s marshland thus also tells the story of a former coastline and the gradual transformation of the terrain.
The La Massonne Regional Nature Reserve lies partly in La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien and partly in Saint-Sornin, in the Charente-Maritime department. Its mosaic of marshes, forests, and heathland, along with its highly diverse flora, gives the reserve a varied character. Both individual habitats and plant diversity are therefore important to understanding the local natural environment.
Nature Trail and Circuit de la Héronnière
The 6.5-kilometre nature trail “sur les traces de la cistude d’Europe” was created by Nature Environnement 17 in collaboration with the municipality. Its title refers to the European pond turtle. Check the local signage before setting out. Another named route is the Circuit de la Héronnière: it passes through two municipalities and follows the former coastline of the Gulf of Brouage.
The Circuit is listed as 13.2 kilometres long, with a moderate difficulty rating and an indicated duration of three hours. This distinguishes the planning details for the two routes: for the nature trail, the 6.5-kilometre distance is the main point; for the Circuit, the longer distance is accompanied by a difficulty rating and a time estimate. Check the route details again before your visit.
The European pond turtle can be observed at the Mare du Grondin along the Circuit. It is a protected freshwater turtle; opportunities to see it are seasonal, and a sighting is not guaranteed. If you are interested in the route for its natural features, bear this limitation in mind when expecting to see wildlife.
Church and Fontaine des Miracles
The Église Saint-Symphorien is a pilgrimage church whose construction began in the 12th century. It was remodelled in the 15th century and restored in the 19th century. Its architectural features include the Romanesque west façade and a round bell tower reminiscent of a windmill. The building’s history and the tower’s distinctive shape offer different ways of looking at the church.
Inside are a seigneurial chapel and two protected 17th-century paintings by Bragny, dated 1676 and 1641, respectively. The works add the church’s furnishings to the picture and provide a distinct historical note within its longer building history.
The church can be visited independently free of charge; you can collect the key at the town hall during opening hours. Check the opening hours before you arrive so you can plan to collect the key.
The Fontaine des Miracles lies at the edge of the former Gulf of the Santons, near the Tour de Broue and the Église Saint-Symphorien. According to local tradition, the spring is believed to have healing properties for rheumatism. The spring and the church are among the sights on the Circuit de la Héronnière, giving the route a cultural dimension as well as its focus on the former coastline.
