Dompierre-Sur-Mer: Canal, Church and Apple Festival
Accommodation in Dompierre-Sur-Mer
Dompierre-Sur-Mer can be discovered through its shipping canal, the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and a range of leisure activities. For events held on specific dates, the exact dates of your trip are another factor to consider.
The Vélodyssée and the canal
The Vélodyssée is the French section of EuroVelo 1, which connects Roscoff with Hendaye and passes through 10 départements, including Charente-Maritime. In Dompierre-Sur-Mer, it runs alongside the shipping canal. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the local section and the full route: the specific reference in Dompierre-Sur-Mer is the canal, while Roscoff and Hendaye are the endpoints of the longer route. The canal is also used by anglers and picnickers. An ensemble along the canal has been listed in the inventory of protected sites since 14 May 1970. Detailed route conditions may change; check the latest information if you plan to include the Vélodyssée in your itinerary.
The Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and its works of art
The Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens was built in the 11th century and was dependent on Maillezais Abbey in Vendée. The church houses the 18th-century ex-voto ship “L’Ange Gardien,” which is classified as a Monument historique. It also displays Dubuisson’s painting “La Présentation au Temple” from 1725, which is likewise classified as a Monument historique. The dates place the origins of the building in the 11th century and the two works of art in the 18th century; the painting is also dated specifically to 1725. Alongside the building’s history, there are two distinct works of art, each with its own date and classification.
La Fête de la Pomme
La Fête de la Pomme takes place every year on the second weekend in October. Check the dates of the current edition before your trip, as the programme may change. Offerings include apple fritters prepared in front of visitors, as well as fresh apple juice pressed on site. The preparation of the fritters is a different part of the festival offering from the freshly pressed juice: both showcase different aspects of the apple theme.
Discovery trail and horse-riding activities
The discovery trail in Dompierre-Sur-Mer is marked with 11 explanatory stops. Unlike the church, which brings together building history and works of art, the trail divides the exploration into several information points. La Maison du Poney in Dompierre-Sur-Mer offers horse-riding activities ranging from recreational riding to competition, as well as holiday courses for different skill levels. The offerings therefore differ both in activity and format: an educational trail on the one hand, and riding and courses with different focuses on the other. Programmes and conditions of participation may change; check the current details if you plan to include a course in your itinerary.
