Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon combines a distinctive valley and woodland setting with historic buildings, a mountain-biking circuit and two picnic areas. This offers several ways to plan your visit: you can explore architectural history and the area’s past, take in the landscape or choose a specific place to stop for a break. The range of themes extends from the history of the town to exploring the forest.

Valley and river landscape

The commune lies in a broad valley between the northern slopes of the Gironde and the Forêt de la Lande forest. The Taillon is a small river that rises in meadows below Montée Blanche, near the hamlet of Couy. Two different scales of landscape come together here: the valley defines the setting of the commune, while the river’s source near Couy provides a specific point of reference. The expansive setting and the Taillon’s source offer different impressions of the local landscape.

Architectural history of the Église Saint-Cyriaque

The Église Saint-Cyriaque preserves structural elements of an early Romanesque predecessor. In the 12th century, its ashlar nave was raised; the choir was completely rebuilt in the early 16th century. These building phases affected different parts of the structure and reflect its development over several centuries. By decree of 23 July 2003, the entire church was listed as a historic monument. Alongside the sequence of building work, the church as a whole is also a focus of interest.

The history of travel in the lower village

In the Middle Ages, the lower village of Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon had a hospice that welcomed travellers on the Way of St James. A calvary cross marks the site of the former hospital. The hospice represents the lower village’s former role in welcoming travellers; the cross marks a specific place connected with the hospital’s history. The history of travel thus complements the architectural history with a social function and a memorial in the present-day village.

Château d’Orignac

The Château d’Orignac lies north of the centre of Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon and is associated with a seigneurie whose history dates back to around 1200. The château was rebuilt several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. An extensive park surrounds the building, and a fortified carriage gate forms the entrance. The seigneurie connection and the later rebuilds represent different historical periods: the association dates back a long way, while the structural changes belong to later centuries.

Mountain-biking circuit in the Forêt de la Lande

Mountain-biking circuit No. 6, “Les circuits couverts et découverts,” is a marked 30 km loop for exploring the Forêt de la Lande. The loop format and markings describe the route; the forest is the focus of the excursion. These are two different kinds of information for planning: 30 km indicates the distance, while the Forêt de la Lande identifies the landscape. Unlike the church and château, this route centres on a cycling activity.

Picnic areas and practical information

Two picnic areas, open year-round and free to access, add to the local amenities. Beside the church is a shaded area with five tables, rubbish bins and toilet facilities. Another area on the D730 towards Mirambeau has two tables and rubbish bins. Their locations and amenities provide practical information for a break: the area by the church is shaded and has toilet facilities, while the other is on the D730 towards Mirambeau.
