Thénac offers several ways to explore the area: the Via Thénac 1 and 2 trails, its Gallo-Roman heritage and the market in the town centre. The trails bring together landscape, church and stoneworking; the Arènes theatre is part of a sanctuary complex, and at the market visitors can find local producers and products from the Saintonge region. The town’s attractions therefore range from nature and crafts to history and regional produce.

Walking trails between church, woodland and crafts

The Via Thénac 1 trail starts at Château Maguier and is open to visitors free of charge every day, year-round. As local access information may change, check before your visit. The trail passes through farmland as well as wooded and natural areas. Along the way, you can admire the Église Saint-Pierre. The trail ends along shaded paths through the Bois des Graves, where you can discover a variety of plant species. Here, you’ll encounter both a named church and a range of landscapes; the shaded woodland forms the final section.

The Via Thénac 2 trail leads to a stoneworking workshop and through the forests of Thénac, an area rich in biodiversity. A traditional lime kiln is also on the trail and can be visited by appointment through the municipal office. The two trails have clearly different focuses: Via Thénac 1 combines a church with several types of landscape, while Via Thénac 2 highlights stoneworking, the lime kiln and the forest of Thénac.

For safety reasons, extraction and cutting at Carrières de Thénac et de Saintonge are not open to the public. Check this access restriction again before planning a visit.

Gallo-Roman heritage and the Médiathèque

The Gallo-Roman theatre of Arènes was part of a sanctuary that included baths and a temple. This connection shows that the historical significance extends beyond the theatre itself to include other parts of the sanctuary. This adds a distinct historical perspective to the landscapes and crafts featured on the trails.

The Médiathèque de Thénac has been housed in the Château de Thénac since 2018 and is open to everyone. To avoid confusion between similarly named local places, note that Via Thénac 1 starts at Château Maguier, while the Médiathèque is housed in the Château de Thénac.

Market and trip planning

At the Marché de Thénac in the town centre, visitors can find local producers and products from the Saintonge region. While the trails highlight landscapes and crafts, the market offers a distinct connection to regional produce. If you’re looking for a hotel in Thénac, these differences can help with your planning: consider whether you want your trip to focus primarily on walking trails and nature, Gallo-Roman heritage, crafts or local produce.
