When planning a trip, Salles-Sur-Mer offers three distinct points of interest: the landscape sloping down towards the Atlantic, the coastal marshes in the southwest, and local history centred on the church, windmill and Fête de la Rosière. If you are looking for a hotel in Salles-Sur-Mer, you can shape your trip around the landscape, historical sites or the annual festival.

Coastal Landscape and Le Panzay

The land around Salles-Sur-Mer gradually slopes down towards the Atlantic: at Pointe du Pendu, the elevation is 17 metres NGF, while at Petite Borde it is 1.5 metres NGF. These two elevation figures illustrate the terrain's descent towards the coast.

Coastal marshes lie in the southwest, crossed by the stream Le Panzay. It flows through the municipal park and the northern part of the marshes before emptying into the Atlantic at Saint-Jean des Sables. This creates a sequence of park, marshes and Atlantic coast that brings the area's landscape character to life.

The Church and the Windmill Ruins

Notre-Dame Church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and is considered to be around 900 years old. It was originally under the authority of the priory of Île d’Aix. It was destroyed twice: in 1356 during the English siege, and later during the Wars of Religion.

Another feature of the local landscape is the Moulin de Plaisance, a circular, three-storey windmill at the highest point in the commune. It is located 28 metres north of the village centre. Its ruins still tower over the village.

Planning for the Fête de la Rosière

Salles-Sur-Mer has celebrated the Fête de la Rosière every year since 1881, on the Sunday closest to 24 June. Pierre François Even founded the celebration. It includes a fair, a dinner and a traditional rural dance that ends with fireworks. If you are planning your stay around the festival, check the specific date for that year: it is based on the nearest Sunday and does not necessarily fall on 24 June. This makes the festival a concrete planning consideration, but one whose date should be checked each year.

Circular Trail and Cycle Route

The Sentier des douze énigmes circular trail leads from the village centre across the plain and along woods and marshes. It passes former castles and explores their stories and legends. The places named along the way include Repose-Pucelle, Cramahé, Roullet and Herbaudière. The route thus links landscapes with local historical lore, while Notre-Dame and the Moulin de Plaisance each provide their own architectural points of interest.

A section of cycle route connecting Salles-Sur-Mer with Saint-Vivien and Châtelaillon-Plage, and thus with the Atlantic, officially opened in September 2025. Check the section's current status before setting off.
