Arces-Sur-Gironde combines Romanesque architectural history with a landscape shaped by the Gironde estuary, hills and marshes. It also has traces of the pilgrimage route, a fountain with a Gallo-Roman connection and local arts and crafts studios. If you are looking for a hotel in Arces-Sur-Gironde, these varied themes can help shape your travel plans: architecture and history, views of the estuary, or a combination of both.

Romanesque Church and Historical Traces

The Church of Saint-Martin in Arces was built in the 12th century in the Saintonge Romanesque style. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; since 1911, the church has been protected as a historic monument of France. The cross shape describes the layout of the floor plan and provides a tangible reference point for understanding the building’s design. The style reflects the Romanesque building tradition of Saintonge.

Smaller structures also tell the story of the area. The Puyveil fountain consists of two fluted, hollowed-out column drums, which probably came from the nearby Gallo-Roman site of Fâ. This presumed origin remains a possibility, not a confirmed attribution. Exceptional wall paintings were discovered at the Brésillas chapel in 2018 during restoration work. They probably date from the 15th or 16th century. The year of discovery and the presumed period of creation therefore refer to two different points in time.

Arces was also a stop on the Way of St James: numerous pilgrims travelled from there to Talmont-sur-Gironde to cross the Gironde. This historical connection places the area on an earlier travel route; it is distinct from the walking and cycling routes described today.

Hills, Estuary and Marshes

Arces-Sur-Gironde has a roughly one-kilometre stretch of shoreline along the Gironde estuary and extends approximately six kilometres inland. These approximate measurements convey the area’s extent between the shore and the hinterland, without reducing the whole area to a single viewpoint. A range of hills links Brézillas, Liboulas and the village centre, offering views of the estuary.

The landscape is different in the Barrails marshes: ditches cross the area, fields and meadows cover it, and individual hunting huts stand among them. Together with the surrounding hills, this creates a contrast between open views and a plain crisscrossed by waterways. Those particularly interested in the landscape will find a variety of scenery that is not limited to views from the shore.

Port Maran sits on a rocky headland at the Gironde estuary. Traditional carrelets line the area—stilt huts typical of Charente-Maritime—and from there, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the estuary. The huts shape the cultural character of this coastal landscape, while the view across the water adds a distinct accent.

On Foot, by Bicycle and Around the Village

The GR® 360 long-distance hiking trail passes through Arces. The Le Tour Royan Atlantique par Marennes cycling tour also passes through the village. There is also a coastal path at Banc de Dau that can be used for an outing along the Gironde estuary, on foot or by bicycle. This means a long-distance hiking trail, a cycling tour and a waterside path offer different options in the area. Conditions on the coastal path may change, so check them before setting out.

As you walk around Arces, you can discover local artists and arts and crafts studios specialising in painting and sculpture. Which studios are open may vary. The Ferme de chez Horry in Arces-sur-Gironde offers another insight into local life: it sells freshly harvested vegetables and jams. Traditionally, the farm keeps dairy cows and raises calves with their mothers. The products on offer may change.

You can explore Arces-Sur-Gironde through different themes, depending on your interests: the church and chapel offer insights into architectural and art history, the pilgrimage connection into the historical travel route, and the hills, marshes and Gironde shoreline into the variety of the landscape.
