La Couarde-sur-Mer combines beaches and water sports with traces of salt production and architectural history. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the beach facilities, seasonal activities and historical sites.

Beaches and coastal paths

Plage de la Pergola is suitable for swimming and is a surfing spot. Plage du Peu Ragot has two tiralos (beach wheelchairs), a ramp providing access to the beach, an accessible platform and reserved accessible parking spaces. Confirm the availability of these facilities before your trip. Peu Ragot is also the only supervised beach in La Couarde-sur-Mer. Lifeguard supervision is seasonal; check the current dates before your visit.

A landscaped path runs along the dune by the beach and offers views of the Pertuis d’Antioche. This gives you the option of treating a beach visit and a scenic walk as two distinct ways to spend time by the sea.

Water sports and cycling

In the salt marsh area on the north coast of La Couarde-sur-Mer, the Centre Nautique Couardais du Goisil offers sailing lessons for children aged five and up. The program includes introductions to windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, foil, wing catamaran sailing and dinghy sailing on sheltered water. The program and booking conditions may change; check in advance. Sailing, kitesurfing, jet skiing, water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding and surf fishing are also available at La Couarde-sur-Mer beach. Specific providers and conditions may change.

For a cycling trip, Le chemin des marais à vélo starts in La Couarde-sur-Mer and is 18 km long. This distance gives you a specific figure to plan around; check route conditions before setting off.

Salt landscapes and local history

Le Sel d’Isabelle has been producing salt since 1920. Its shop sells fleur de sel, natural salt, and sweet and savory regional products directly to customers. Product availability may change. In 2026, visits to the salt pans were free and did not require an appointment, and were scheduled daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 1 to September 15, except in rainy weather. If you are traveling later, check the current dates and conditions.

Chenal du Goisil is a picturesque spot on the north coast of La Couarde-sur-Mer, popular with painters and photographers. The canal of Chenal du Goisil probably dates back to the Middle Ages. Until 1882, the Chenal served as a refinery where the gray, coarse salt of ĂŽle de RĂ© was processed. The site therefore combines scenic views with the history of salt processing.

Church and bandstand

The parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation was completely rebuilt between 1865 and 1867 to plans by architect Ernest Massiou. The church contains a set of 14 stained-glass windows depicting figures. Together, the construction dates and windows offer a concrete glimpse into the local cultural heritage.

The Kiosque Ă  musique is the last surviving bandstand on ĂŽle de RĂ©. It was inaugurated in 1895 and most recently restored in 2017. Concerts are held there during the season; dates may vary. Its history and that of the church offer two distinct points of interest for a trip focused on cultural history.
