Saint-Savinien lies on the Charente River, in a bend formed by a limestone outcrop. The river and the rock shape the town’s landscape. Other highlights include a Romanesque church, museums, local art and crafts, and various routes for exploring the outdoors. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on architectural history, exhibitions, or the river landscape and its paths.

Cultural history and collections

The Église Saint-Savinien was built as a Romanesque church between the 12th and 13th centuries. A decree dated November 19, 1910, protects its main façade, nave and bell tower as historic monuments. The nave is the elongated main part of the church; as well as the façade and bell tower, this section of the building is therefore specifically named. The building thus combines a medieval origin with a precisely defined protected status.

The Musée de la Miniature offers a different perspective. Its series of miniature displays, at a scale of 1:12, depicts rural life in the late 19th century, as well as the lives of the working class, the petite bourgeoisie and the aristocracy in various regions of France. The scale and the social groups depicted give the collection its distinctive focus: you can explore rural ways of life and differences between social classes in miniature.

The Maison du Patrimoine is a rural museum with old tools and objects from the Gallo-Roman period. Together with the miniature displays, it offers a varied look at material artifacts and ways of life from the past. If you are particularly interested in earlier periods, the Maison du Patrimoine, with its Gallo-Roman objects, offers a different focus from the miniatures, which cover the late 19th century and several social groups.

Cargo Bleu presents local art and crafts through exhibitions and for sale. It also regularly hosts events featuring demonstrations by artists and craftspeople. This adds a focus on creative work and live demonstrations to the museums. As the events program may change, it is worth checking before your visit.

Routes through the landscape and heritage

The routes pass through different landscapes. The Circuit des Carrières – PR 31 follows the cliffs and former quarries of Saint-Savinien. The Circuit d’Agonnay – les Chaumes & Sèchebec – PR 32, by contrast, runs through wet meadows and dry calcareous grasslands in the Prée de la Charente and Sèchebec Natura 2000 sites. The two circular routes therefore highlight different landscape features: cliffs and former quarries on PR 31, and the contrast between wet and dry habitats on PR 32.

The waymarked Chemin du Martin-Pêcheur also passes through a landscape with its own environmental and heritage interest: it runs through the Charenton valley. A school class studied its environment and heritage, after which the municipality marked the route. Cyclists have another option with the Flow Vélo: from Crazannes, a detour to Saint-Savinien follows the Charente’s flower-lined banks. The valley walking route and the riverside cycling detour each offer a different focus.

On the Tèrra-Aventura treasure hunt, participants use the free smartphone app. They follow clues, solve puzzles and search for the treasure with the Poï’z “Zart’”. The activity combines a route with a challenge: rather than simply following a path, you work your way to the destination by following clues and solving puzzles.

Another way to explore the Charente is a cruise aboard the Bernard Palissy III, an electric-solar excursion boat that operates between Saint-Savinien and Saintes. The boat can carry some bicycles. If you are planning a trip that includes bicycle transport, check the timetable and operating conditions in advance, as these may change.
