Saint-Sauvant: Church, Coran Valley and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Saint-Sauvant
Saint-Sauvant offers two main ways to explore during a stay: Romanesque architecture around Saint-Sylvain and trails through a landscape shaped by the Coran. The routes vary in length, starting points and course, and two of them also have approximate durations. The “Petite Cité de Caractère” label further reflects the character of the town. When choosing a hotel in Saint-Sauvant, you may want to consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on architecture or on walking and hiking trails.
Location and landscape
Saint-Sauvant sits on a rocky promontory above the Coran Valley. The valley is designated a Natura 2000 site and is one of the sensitive natural areas of the Charente-Maritime department. The Romanesque church of Saint-Sylvain stands on a hill above the town and the Coran and Pidou valleys.
Romanesque church and historical traces
The Romanesque church of Saint-Sylvain dates from the 12th century. Its richly decorated chancel apse features a row of arches topped with diamond-shaped points. Numerous corbels bear depictions of animals, mythical creatures or human masks. The arches and geometric decoration sit alongside figurative motifs; the design can be explored detail by detail.
Merovingian sarcophagi found around the church attest to an important Christian community in the 5th century. At the entrance to the town, the former town gate marks the start of a walk to discover the local architectural heritage. The medieval tower is not open to the public; it probably dates from between 1300 and 1450.
Compare walking and hiking trails
The Circuit des Vieilles Pierres is an 8 km walking trail with an approximate duration of two hours. It starts at Place 19 mars 1962. The marked PR 22 “La Vallée du Coran” hiking trail covers 10 km and takes about two and a half hours. It starts at Place Gilberte Bouquet, the former fairground, and is marked in yellow. Compared with the Circuit, the PR 22 is two kilometres longer and takes around half an hour more; both durations are approximate.
The Terra-Aventura route also starts at Place Gilberte Bouquet. It is an entertaining, family-friendly geocaching walk of 1.5 km. This makes it considerably shorter than the Circuit and PR 22; its geocaching format also sets it apart from those two routes. The Sentier d’Interprétation de la Vallée du Coran, by contrast, starts at the church, passes through the Paléosite and ends at the Étang des Bujoliers in Saint-Césaire.
Choosing by starting point makes for a straightforward comparison: the Circuit starts at Place 19 mars 1962, while the interpretation trail starts at the church. PR 22 and Terra-Aventura, on the other hand, share Place Gilberte Bouquet as their starting point. The two routes that start there differ considerably in length: the PR 22 covers 10 km, while the geocaching route is 1.5 km.
