Port-d'Envaux offers several specific ways to plan a trip: historic buildings, stone sculpture, nature trails and activities on or along the Charente. You can shape your plans around your main interest – such as architectural history, an outdoor excursion or a seasonal boat trip. The different time estimates are also useful for planning: a guided tour takes one hour, while a hiking route is listed as taking two hours.

Historic buildings and their details

The Château de Panloy was built during the reign of Louis XV on the banks of the Charente and offers one-hour guided tours. It is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. A distinctive architectural detail is the dovecote, dated 1620, with 3,000 round terracotta nesting boxes.

The Chaussée de Saint-James also has a specific architectural history: it was built on an old Roman road and has 22 arches, including three original vaulted arches. The Chapelle de Saint-James was rebuilt after the Wars of Religion on the ruins of a former priory. This priory served as a hospital in the 13th century. The historic perspectives are therefore distinct: the Chaussée is about road construction and its arches, while the chapel is about rebuilding and former use.

Art carved directly into the quarry

Les Lapidiales offer a different cultural focus. La Galaxie des Pierres Levées (Les Lapidiales) has used the former Chabossières quarry in Port-d'Envaux since 2001. Sculptors from around the world are welcomed there as artists in residence and create their works directly on the quarry faces. Les Lapidiales is open year-round; admission is free and open to everyone. While the focus at buildings such as the Chaussée or the Château is on architecture, here it is on artistic work in the quarry.

Wetland, nature park and recreation area

The Vallon du Bel Air is a wetland of around 20 hectares on the border between Port-d'Envaux and Crazannes, with a nature trail. The Panloy nature park covers 7 hectares; its nature trail offers a chance to discover the local flora and fauna. Pré Valade is a 2.5-hectare public recreation area with footpaths. The different area sizes give a sense of scale for the three sites: around 20 hectares at the Vallon, 7 at the nature park and 2.5 at Pré Valade.

Pré Valade also has a mixed-use fishing area accessible to people with reduced mobility. This adds another specific activity to the recreation area's footpaths. Together, the information about the wetland, nature park and Pré Valade offers different reasons to spend time outdoors – from following a nature trail to spending time at the fishing area.

Hiking, cycling route and seasonal boat trip

For a hike with a stated distance and duration, there is an 8-kilometre route that takes two hours. It starts in front of the church of Saint-Saturnin-de-Séchaud in Port-d'Envaux. La Flow Vélo passes through the town and crosses a wetland via a footbridge. As the route may change, check the current route before setting out by bike.

There is also a seasonal option on the Charente: the Bernard Palissy III electric-solar excursion boat stops in Port-d'Envaux. From April to October, it offers river cruises departing from Saintes. If you would like to include a trip in your plans, check the timetable for your chosen dates.
