Cravans offers a range of things to explore during a stay: a wetland, architectural and artistic heritage, country lanes and recurring events. If you are considering Cravans as a destination, these highlights can help you match your interests with what the area has to offer. Attractions range from the ZNIEFF Bois Mou to historic mills and circular routes of varying lengths.

The Bois Mou natural area

The ZNIEFF Bois Mou covers 49.21 hectares in Cravans and Saint-André-de-Lidon. It forms a wet hollow on the edge of the Seudre, characterized by reed beds, willow thickets, oak groves and a slowly flowing stream. The natural area can therefore be understood both through its landscape and its plant life: species found there include marsh gentian (Gentiana pneumonanthe), marsh orchid (Orchis palustris) and Epipactis palustris. The botanical importance of Bois Mou is thus reflected in specific species, not just in the interplay of water, trees and reeds.

Saint-Pierre Church and religious buildings

Saint-Pierre Church retains its bell tower and parts of the apse and choir dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was rebuilt after fires during the Wars of Religion; old charred stones are still visible on the present-day façade. The wall decorations also tell the story of a later chapter: they were discovered during masonry work in 2005, prompting the restoration of the wall paintings. This single building therefore brings together medieval architectural features, traces of destruction and rediscovered polychrome decorations.

At the entrance to Cravans, the Hosanna Cross stands beside the road to Gémozac. It rests on a fluted column with an Ionic capital. The Croix Notre-Dame has its own, more recent history: it was erected in 1858 and rebuilt in 2001 after being toppled in the storm of December 1999.

Fountains and mill sites

The restored Fontaine du jardin public dates from 1715. It was once used as a washhouse for hemp and flax grown in the surrounding area. The fountain thus points to an agricultural use, while the mills of Cravans bring grain processing and water into view as further themes from the area's history.

Le Port, on the boundary between the communes of Cravans and Saint-André-de-Lidon, was a Gallo-Roman port. The site includes the remains of a watermill alongside a renovated windmill with a conical roof made of curved tiles. The mills at Le Port were used until the beginning of the 20th century. Moulin Neuf is a different mill site: it was once home to a grain mill that included a two-storey windmill. Its lintels bear the dates 1612 and 1838.

Country lanes and circular routes

Cravans has around 30 kilometres of country lanes, where walkers can discover varied landscapes. The routes are suitable for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. Two circular routes offer a clear comparison of distances for planning: the Circuit vert is about five kilometres long and links Cravans, Saint-André-de-Lidon and Les Brousses. The 20-kilometre Circuit bleu passes through Cravans, Saint-Simon-de-Pellouaille, Tesson and Rioux. Both are circular routes, but they pass through different places. Check trail conditions before setting out on the Circuit bleu.

Event and tasting

As a rural tradition, the Fête des battages is held in Cravans every year in early September. Visitors can see a remarkable collection of vintage tractors. As dates and programmes may vary, it is advisable to check the specific event details. The Hanouille wine estate offers estate tours and Cognac tastings; confirm the dates before you travel.

For orientation when leaving Cravans towards Saint-André-de-Lidon: the private Domaine de Beaumont is visible on the left from the road, but cannot be visited.
