Port-Des-Barques: Coastal Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Port-Des-Barques
Port-Des-Barques and Île Madame are part of the Grand Site de France “Estuaire de la Charente – Arsenal de Rochefort”. For planning your trip, this provides a framework of coastal landscapes, nature and the heritage of the arsenal. When choosing a hotel, you can consider some specific questions: Would you like to include a coastal walk, are you interested in architectural history, or are you planning an activity on the water?
Coastal Landscapes and Nature
The redevelopment of the Pointe de Port-des-Barques, completed in April 2026, includes a restored dune fringe. Almost two hectares have been returned to characteristic local vegetation. The point also has a three-kilometre coastal path. Its length gives you a specific measure for planning a stay focused on the coast. Île Madame is classified as a natural area and complements this focus on landscape and nature.
History Around the Arsenal
Fort de l’Île Madame was built in the early 18th century to help defend the Arsenal de Rochefort. During a guided tour, the roof terrace is accessible; from there, you can enjoy a viewpoint over the Charente estuary and the Pertuis Sea. The Chapelle Notre Dame de la Médaille Miraculeuse offers a different historical connection: it was completed in 1948 using stones from the Arsenal de Rochefort, which was destroyed in 1944, and opened for worship. The fort thus brings together its historic defensive purpose and the view from the roof terrace.
Les Cabanes de l’Estuaire adds oyster farming to this history. The eco-museum is located in Port-des-Barques in a former oyster hut within an active oyster farm. The fort, chapel and museum represent different historical themes: the defence of the arsenal, the reuse of stones after its destruction, and the former use of a hut in the context of oyster farming.
Activities on the Water
The options vary by type of activity. Recreational freshwater fishing is possible at Lac des Rouches in Port-des-Barques. At Passe aux filles on Île Madame, a guided introduction to recreational mudflat fishing is available. This includes observing marine life and practising responsibly in a way that protects biodiversity. A pool at Plage des Anses makes swimming possible regardless of the tide.
The Ferme Aquacole on Île Madame also offers a direct connection to local oyster farming: oyster tastings and guided tours of the farm are available there. Visitor arrangements may vary, so check in advance what options are available for your visit. This will help you distinguish between fishing, guided mudflat fishing, swimming and an introduction to oyster farming when planning your stay.
