Aytré can be explored through a range of travel interests: Plage d’Aytré and its bay shape the coastal landscape, while discovery trails pass through the marshland and explore aspects of local heritage. There is also the wildlife of Marais Doux, a church with a long history and an insight into Charentais oyster farming. If you are looking for a hotel in Aytré, these highlights can help you decide whether the town suits your travel plans. Sandy beach, bay and seafront paths

Plage d’Aytré is a 3.5-kilometre-long sandy beach. According to a municipal warning retrieved on 20 August 2026, a mayoral decree prohibits swimming there until further notice because the water quality is considered inadequate. Check again before your trip to see whether the ban is still in effect. Between two limestone headlands, it forms the shallow, wide Anse de Godechaud. The beach’s length, sandy shore and the described shape of the bay give the coastal landscape its distinctive character.

The seafront paths in Aytré are also designed for a range of activities: they are suitable for walking and cycling. A cycle route classified as part of the “Vélodyssée” runs along them between Roscoff and Biarritz. As route alignments can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out on a bike ride.

Two discovery trails with different focuses

“Le Marais de Tasdon, l’héritage des Salines” is five kilometres long and passes through the Marais de Tasdon-La Moulinette. The “Des Salines … à aujourd’hui” discovery trail in Aytré covers ten kilometres and features twelve information panels about local heritage. The two trails therefore differ both in their stated length and in their described focus: one bears the legacy of the salt marshes in its name, while the other explores local heritage through information panels. The distances provide a direct comparison of the trails’ lengths.

Marais Doux and its wildlife

Marais Doux covers approximately 80 hectares and is easily accessible from Aytré’s town centre. Wetland animals found there include birds, otters and coypu. This natural area and its named wildlife complement the town’s coastal and heritage attractions. The approximate area and proximity to the town centre describe the marshland, while the animals listed give an impression of its fauna.

Church and traces of history

Église Saint-Étienne was built in the 10th century and has a history spanning almost a thousand years. During the Siege of La Rochelle in 1627–1628, Louis XIII and Richelieu converted it into a royal chapel. The church reopened on 5 and 6 December 2025 after several months of work. Check visiting arrangements before your trip.

Another trace of history is the Gallo-Roman villa of Bongraine, which was in use from the 1st to the 5th century AD. In the field of art, there is Le Cheval d’Aytré: the work is by sculptor Christian Renonciat and dates from 1989. The church, villa and sculpture represent different chapters in the town’s history and cultural life.

Oysters as a local delicacy

Near Plage du Platin, visitors can sample oysters at oyster farmers’ huts along Chemin de la Gigas. The growers uphold the Charentais oyster-farming tradition. This culinary highlight complements Aytré’s landscape and heritage attractions. Availability at individual huts may vary, so check what is on offer before visiting.
