Breuillet lies on the Arvert Peninsula between the Seudre and the Gironde, a few kilometres from the ocean. If you are looking for a hotel in Breuillet, you can choose where to stay based on your travel interests: historic buildings, walking trails and a varied landscape offer different ways to enjoy your stay.

Location and landscape

The surrounding area includes numerous wooded and protected areas, as well as cultivated fields and pastureland. Vineyards and oyster beds add to the landscape, with cattle egrets and grey herons flying above them. These features reveal different aspects of the area: cultivated land, woodland and birdlife.

Churches and historic buildings

Saint-Vivien Church is documented as early as 1186 and was designated a historic monument on 9 May 1914. Its wide portal is framed by archivolts—that is, arched mouldings, decorated here with geometric patterns. The façade is described as a “triumphal arch.” The two dates serve different purposes: 1186 is the date of the earliest historical reference, while 9 May 1914 is the date of its designation. For travellers interested in culture, Saint-Vivien combines an early historical reference with a specifically described façade design.

The Logis de la Roche, also known as Le Prieuré, is part of the area’s historic building heritage. It was a former priory under the authority of Cluny Abbey. The building preserves two Renaissance fireplaces, one of which depicts the sacrifice of Abraham. The name Le Prieuré and its former ties to Cluny place the building in its historical context, while the fireplace features a specific Renaissance motif. The well at the Logis de Chalézac is also dated: according to an engraved inscription, it dates to 1593.

The façade of Breuillet’s Protestant temple displays the sculpted Bible created for its predecessor. The former temple served Breuillet’s Huguenots. The façade motif thus connects a specific architectural detail with the history of the earlier building.

Trails and nature

Three walking trails are available in Breuillet, developed in collaboration with the Communauté d’Agglomération Royan Atlantique. One specific example of the local landscape is the La Rainette loop trail, which passes through the Saint-Augustin freshwater marsh, known for its distinctive flora and rich birdlife. The trails and marsh offer a different focus from the churches and historic estates. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Events throughout the year

The FĂŞtes Romanes and concerts in the Jeudis Musicaux series are among the events held throughout the year. Alongside the buildings and landscape, they offer cultural reasons to visit; check the specific dates before travelling.
