Montlieu-La-Garde can be explored from two different perspectives: the architectural history of its churches and the hiking trails, with their connections to the landscape and water. There are clear points to consider when planning your trip: dates on the churches, the conditional possibility of seeing inside one church, and two hiking trails, each with its own character. This lets you decide in advance which themes you would like to focus on.

Churches and their construction dates

The Chapelle romane de Saint-Vivien is considered the oldest church in the municipality. Its construction dates from the late 11th to the early 12th century. The facade features seven arches, above which stands a bell tower with a bell dating from 1846. The construction period, facade design and bell offer different points of interest when viewing the chapel.

The Eglise de Challaux also has several historical dates associated with it. Its nave dates from the 12th century; the choir and bell tower appear to date from the 13th and 14th centuries, respectively. A bell dating from 1654 hangs in the bell tower. The dates distinguish between the building’s parts: while the nave is clearly attributed to the 12th century, the dating of the choir and tower is expressed more cautiously.

The Eglise Notre Dame de l'assomption was built in 1857 and consecrated in 1858. Its bell tower dates from 1875. When the church is open, you can see murals, an organ and the altar of Saint Ixile inside. There are also two paintings donated by Napoleon III in memory of his visit to Montlieu, as well as two older paintings from the former church of Saint-Laurent-du-Roc. The church must be open to see inside; the historical information about its construction and furnishings is separate from this condition.

Washhouses and architectural details

The Lavoir de La Garde is also known as the Lavoir du Rambaud. It was rebuilt faithfully to the original and is a place for walks and picnics. The two names refer to the same washhouse, which is useful to know if you come across either term. Its use invites you to see the site not only as a historic structure, but also as a place to take a break outdoors.

Further details can be found in the Couret valley: a stone-built spring is set into a wall there. The fully renovated Lavoir du Cellier is also located in the valley, near the wastewater treatment plant. The spring and washhouse are distinct architectural features; both add to the picture of the places and structures described in Montlieu-La-Garde beyond its churches.

A memorial site

The Monument des Américains commemorates nine Americans whose aircraft was shot down over the area of Saint-Vivien on 31 December 1943. The date and the number of men give the monument a specific historical context. It stands alongside the churches and washhouses as a point of interest, but offers a different kind of visit: here, the focus is on commemorating an event from the Second World War.

Two hiking trails, different highlights

The signposted Circuit pédestre N°17a – Les Trois Fontaines circular trail starts at Place du Général De Gaulle in Montlieu-la-Garde. This provides a specific starting point. The Circuit pédestre N°17b – La forêt is described as a wooded, hilly excursion through the landscapes of the Double Saintongeaise. The two trails can be distinguished by their stated features: for the first, the circular route and starting point are highlighted; for the second, the wooded, hilly landscape.

Whether you are mainly interested in architectural history, memorial sites or trails, Montlieu-La-Garde offers several clearly distinct themes for your stay. The church dates, the conditional possibility of visiting the interior of the Eglise Notre Dame de l'assomption, and the different descriptions of the hiking trails give you specific starting points for planning your trip.
