Rochefort brings together the history of a French naval arsenal with museums, historic sites and botanical places. If you choose your destination based on your cultural interests, you’ll find a range of highlights here: from military shipbuilding to historic interiors, gardens and wildlife observation.

Naval History and Historic Sites

Construction of the Corderie Royale began in 1666. It was the first building of its kind in a French naval arsenal. Today, the Corderie Royale is a listed building and Rochefort’s largest historic site. Its construction history and present-day significance come together in one place.

The Formes de Radoub also tell the story of shipbuilding. These historic facilities were used to maintain and repair ships. Facilities of this kind were built for the first time in France in Rochefort, between 1668 and 1671. Together with the Corderie Royale, they illustrate different aspects of maritime history: the early construction of a facility of this kind and the practical facilities used to maintain ships.

Museums, Collections and City History

The Hôtel de Cheusses / Arsenal of the Musée national de la Marine presents collections about the naval arsenal established at the behest of Louis XIV. The exhibits cover every aspect of military shipbuilding. They offer a broader perspective on Rochefort’s naval history, including the development and various fields of shipbuilding.

The Centre d’Interprétation de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine offers a permanent exhibition that helps visitors understand the city and its development. It complements the themes of individual buildings with a perspective on Rochefort as a city.

At the Ancienne École de Médecine Navale, you can see drawings brought back by researchers of the time from expeditions around the world. The drawings travelled aboard ships. They offer a tangible connection to the expeditions and life at sea, without focusing solely on ships and facilities.

The Maison de Pierre Loti in Rochefort brings together several design traditions in its historic interior, including a Turkish mosque, a Renaissance-style salon and a Japanese pagoda. Reservations are required to visit; allow about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Gardens and Nature in Rochefort

The Jardin des Retours is a botanical site established in 1991 near the Corderie Royale. Its themes are the great maritime and botanical expeditions and ships’ return to port. In this way, the garden draws on seafaring history while also focusing on plants and designed landscapes.

The Conservatoire du Bégonia houses Europe’s first begonia collection, with more than 1,000 hybrid varieties. Plant enthusiasts will find a different way to explore Rochefort’s botanical themes here than at the Jardin des Retours: the focus is on a collection of begonias.

Walk and Habitats at the Station de Lagunage

The Station de Lagunage de Rochefort offers a guided walk. It explains the journey of wastewater from the tap to the Charente River in an accessible way, while also exploring the site’s rich wildlife. The site also includes shallow, vegetated ponds created by the LPO. They are 10 to 20 centimetres deep and provide wading birds with space to breed. A visit to the station thus brings together an explanation of the wastewater process and a specific habitat for birds.

The different themes can be distinguished by what you want to focus your stay on: the history of the naval arsenal, museums and historic interiors, or botanical collections and nature. Rochefort offers both individual, clearly defined topics to explore and places where maritime history meets other aspects of the city.
