Les Portes-En-Ré can be explored through a range of interests: birdlife and cycling, activities on the water, and coastal history each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide what you want to prioritise on your trip. Nature watching, beach activities or historic sites may help you choose.

Nature, birdlife and cycling

A total of 227 bird species have been recorded in the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve on Île de Ré. This figure makes birdlife a distinctive nature theme and offers a specific point of interest for travellers interested in birds.

A cycle path runs alongside the Maison du Fier and the nature reserve; there are bicycle parking spaces at the Maison du Fier. If you plan to include cycling in your trip, both the route and the place to leave your bike are useful points to bear in mind.

Coast and activities on the water

Sailing is possible at Plage de Trousse Chemise. At low tide, a walk on the Banc du Bûcheron at the same beach is a pleasant option. This lets you choose between a walk that depends on the tides and sailing as a beach activity.

When it comes to surfing, it is worth comparing beach breaks and reef breaks: Petit Bec is a beach break that picks up the swell particularly well, producing hollow-breaking waves. The small surf spot at Lizay is reserved for experienced surfers; waves break there to the right and left over a reef.

Lighthouse history, culture and food

The Maison-phare de Trousse-Chemise lies east of Les Portes-En-Ré. Its beacon was first lit in 1875. After restoration, the building reopened to the public in June 2022 and houses exhibitions on climate, the ocean and coastal protection. Access and exhibition content may change.

The dates serve different purposes: 1875 marks when the beacon was first lit, while June 2022 marks the reopening of the restored building. This distinguishes the beginning of the lighthouse’s history from its later opening to the public.

The redoubt is also part of the coast’s history: it was built in 1674 to plans by Vauban to protect the Rochefort arsenal and prevent a possible landing on the Bûcheron sandbank. Protecting the arsenal and repelling a possible landing illustrate the fortification’s military role. The redoubt thus adds a different historical perspective to the lighthouse story.

There is also a seasonal culinary highlight: Les Huîtres de Trousse Chemise offers on-site oyster tastings from May to September. This seasonal offering may change, so check before your visit whether a tasting is available.
