Foulerot: Beach, Forest and Hotels
Accommodation in Foulerot
Foulerot and Plaisance lie on the edge of the Forêt des Saumonards, a 600-hectare forest massif. The landscape around Foulerot therefore offers more than the beach: forest paths, a viewpoint above the Anse de la Malconche, and other protected or natural areas provide a variety of excursion options. The Forêt Briquet and the Marais du Douhet coastal wetland are nearby. For your trip, you can focus on the beach and forest and include other landscape destinations depending on your interests.
Forest Paths and Landscapes
The Forêt des Saumonards offers numerous marked trails for walking, cycling, or horse riding. Paths through the forest run in the shade of pines and holm oaks and lead to the beach and to an impressive viewpoint above the Anse de la Malconche. If you like to have a specific destination in mind when you go for a walk, the viewpoint above the bay is a separate option from the beach.
Another specific point of reference is the Chemin d’Oléron. It runs through the heart of the Forêt des Saumonards between Boyardville and Saint-Denis-d’Oléron. As well as the general choice of marked trails, there is therefore a named route with two specified endpoints. The route and the information about the trails answer different planning questions: the Chemin d’Oléron identifies a route through the forest, while the types of transport available are the focus for the marked trails.
The Forêt Briquet is also near Foulerot: a protected area of 92.3 hectares that is open to the public. Footpaths lead through the forest to the sea. The size figures for the Forêt Briquet and the Forêt des Saumonards refer to different categories: one is a protected area, while the other is a 600-hectare forest massif. The Marais du Douhet, a coastal wetland of more than 400 hectares, is also near Foulerot. Its wetland character sets it apart from the two forest areas.
Beach and Practical Information
Plage de Foulerot is a family-friendly sandy beach overlooking Île d’Aix and Fort Boyard. The calm water is suitable for families with children, but the beach is not supervised. The views of the two named landmarks add a scenic touch, while the calm water makes the beach suitable for families. If you plan to go to the beach with children, also take into account that there is no lifeguard supervision.
There is parking for cars and bicycles near the beach, as well as a stop for seasonal shuttle buses. If you plan to use the shuttle to get there, check the timetable for your travel date in advance.
Local Attractions and Dining
Place Marie Briquet in Foulerot commemorates Marie Briquet.
La Guitoune is a bar, restaurant, and tapas bar in the village of Foulerot. In August 2026, it offered a selection of shellfish dishes as well as fish and seafood. As the menu may change, check the current selection before visiting. This allows you to include dining as a separate part of your trip planning, without confusing it with the excursion destinations in the forest or at the beach.
