Discover Belluno: city history and Nevegal
Accommodation in Belluno
Belluno offers two distinct focuses for your trip: historic buildings and museums in the city, and the landscape and sporting opportunities of Nevegal. Use the following points of reference to decide whether culture, seasonal activities or both should shape your stay. Travel arrangements and information services also play a role in planning.
Getting there and finding your way
Belluno is about an hour’s drive from Venice via the A27 motorway; journey times may vary depending on traffic. Belluno railway station is on the Calalzo–Padua and Belluno–Conegliano lines. The bus station is opposite, with Dolomitibus services from around the province and to inland destinations. Check current routes and timetables for your trip.
The IAT office in Belluno provides information about trekking and cycling routes in Valbelluna and the Belluno Dolomites National Park. You can also get tourist guidebooks, maps and information brochures there. An official map brings together information on 69 museums in the province of Belluno; check the opening hours of individual museums separately before visiting.
City history through buildings and museums
Porta Dojona is part of a fortified complex at the northeastern corner of Belluno’s old city walls. Its inner arch was built in 1289 by Vecello da Cusighe for Bishop and Count Adalgerio da Villalta. The Torrione marks a different period: it is the only surviving element of the old city walls. Construction began in 1481 under the Venetian rector Perazzo Malipiero; Luca Foscarini completed it in 1489.
The Teatro Comunale was built in the neoclassical style to a design by Giuseppe Segusini between 1833 and 1835. The theatre features nine stone and bronze busts of Venetian rectors from the 16th and 17th centuries. Palazzo Fulcis took on its present form in 1776 under the architect Valentino Alpago-Novello, when three previously separate buildings were joined together. It preserves significant 17th- and 18th-century stucco decorations. The 15th-century Palazzo dei Rettori and the 16th-century Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta offer further examples of different building periods.
The Museo Civico preserves archaeological finds from Belluno’s early history and the Roman Empire. The Museo Etnografico del Parco presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about life in the mountains. These offer different perspectives: architecture and its history, alongside collections and exhibitions about history and mountain life.
Nevegal: landscape and sport
South of Belluno lie the gentle contours of the Prealpi del Nevegal. Nevegal reaches an altitude of 1,700 metres and includes coniferous forests and flowering meadows. Activities vary across the seasons: Nevegal is suitable for a range of summer and winter sports. Winter sports include alpine skiing and cross-country skiing; there is also a slope for night skiing. Check its operating status before your trip.
Cheese and local cuisine
Piave DOP is one of the traditional cheeses of the Belluno area. You can sample cheese from the Belluno area directly at mountain dairies and local cheese shops; check individual places before setting out. At Il Cantiere del Gusto in Belluno, dishes are prepared with local products from a short supply chain. The aim is to promote the Belluno area through local culinary specialities. As menus and opening arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting.
