Vigo di Cadore: Churches, Forts and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Vigo di Cadore
Vigo di Cadore offers several starting points for planning your trip: churches and historic sites tell the story of different eras, while hiking trails lead to an open-air museum, into the mountain landscape and up Monte Tudaio. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to first consider whether you mainly want to explore local history or allow more time for hikes. The destinations offer different experiences, ranging from a short out-and-back route to longer mountain trails.
Churches and History in Vigo di Cadore
The Chiesa di Sant'Orsola was built between 1313 and 1321 as a funerary chapel. The 14th-century church is considered a national monument. The Chiesa della Madonna della Difesa has a different historical origin: local residents had it built between 1512 and 1515 as a votive offering after the threat posed by the troops of Maximilian I of Habsburg had passed. The construction dates and origins give each church its own distinct significance.
The Chiesa Pievanale di San Martino di Tours dates from 1559 and was expanded in the 18th century. The bell tower opposite also dates from 1599. Another building history can be seen at the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bernardino da Siena: it was almost entirely rebuilt in 1947, while its choir belongs to the original 15th-century building.
The Chiesa di San Daniele also has a long history. It already existed in 1345 and was rebuilt in 1350. In Salagona, the Chiesa di Santa Margherita has stood since 1272; it is considered the oldest surviving church in Cadore. If you are choosing historic sites by date, you will find milestones here ranging from the 13th to the 20th century.
In addition, the Biblioteca storica cadorina was founded in 1892 by Professor Antonio Ronzon. The Presepio Animato di Laggio was established in 1984 in the former primary school in Laggio di Cadore. Together with the churches, these institutions offer further ways to explore local and cultural history, without limiting your visit to a single period of architecture.
Military History and Trails to Historic Sites
The Italian Corps of Engineers built the Forte del Monte Tudaio at the summit of Monte Tudaio, at an elevation of 2,114 metres, between 1911 and 1915. The ascent from Piniè to the summit follows a military mule track of more than eight kilometres and takes about four hours. The approximate duration and trail length help distinguish this hike from shorter routes in the area.
Itinerario 004 is a 1.66-kilometre out-and-back route from Laggio to the Appostamento militare Col Ciampon. The destination is considered an open-air museum, with trenches, military structures and relics from the First World War. The route connects a specific historic site with a manageable trail length. The visit focuses above all on the history of the military structures.
The Batteria di Col Pelos and the Forte di Col Piccolo were also part of the Fortezza Cadore-Maè defensive system. The trench at the Batteria di Col Pelos is considered well preserved and accessible. From Palù near Vigo, the battery can be reached along a convenient uphill road for about one kilometre. The underground Vallo alpino del Littorio defensive system was built by Mussolini between 1939 and 1941. Its location near Piniè can be reached by following the signs for the Forte di Monte Tudaio; check the wayfinding on site.
Mountain Trails, Views and Climbing Crags
Itinerario 071 leads from Laggio via the Sentiero botanico Gabriele Larese and Col Ciampon to the Chiesetta San Daniele. The short, accessible botanical trail features trees, shrubs and flowers. From Col Ciampon, a steep ascent of about 20 minutes also leads to the Chiesetta San Daniele. The approach includes fixed ropes and is considered not exposed. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them on site.
Monte Tudaio offers a 360-degree panorama from the Alta Val Piave to the Val d'Ansiei, including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Peralba. The Palestra di Roccia, a limestone climbing crag, is also located on Monte Tudaio. It is about a ten-minute walk from the small car park at the barrier in Piniè. This gives you a named viewpoint and a climbing crag as two different mountain destinations.
The Altavia dei Forti dell’Oltrepiave starts in Piniè in Vigo di Cadore and runs for 59.83 kilometres to Passo Mauria. Compared with the 1.66-kilometre round trip to the Appostamento militare Col Ciampon and the roughly four-hour ascent to the summit of Monte Tudaio, it is a considerably longer hike. These different distances can help you plan your stay according to the time and trail length you prefer.
Malga Casera Razzo and Regional Cuisine
Malga Casera Razzo is located at an elevation of 1,800 metres and can be reached by car from Vigo di Cadore. There, you can taste and buy local cheeses. The cheeses on sale are made from the milk of cattle grazing on the plateau or from milk sourced from nearby mountain pastures. This offers an insight into local cheese production alongside churches and mountain trails.
The malga offers changing lunch and dinner menus by reservation only. Confirm your reservation and the current menu before your visit. This lets you include a culinary stop in your trip plans while choosing historic sites and trails according to your interests.
