In Dosoledo, architectural history, the Ladin culture of Comelico and themed trails cater to different travel interests. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on historic architecture, an annual tradition or trails featuring wooden sculptures. The specific local and thematic highlights range from a long row of wooden barns to named routes connecting Dosoledo with places in Comelico.

Themed Trails and Wooden Sculptures

Four themed “Troi” trails connect Dosoledo with Padola, Leri, Candide and Casa Mazzagno. Wooden sculptures by local carvers tell stories about the mountain traditions of Comelico. One specific route is the “Tròi dli Tradizion” between Candide and Dosoledo. It is an easy themed trail, with its starting point on Via Staunovo in Dosoledo. The “Tròi dli mascri,” by contrast, focuses on Carnival: the trail runs between Dosoledo and the Fienile di Bigaran and presents the theme through around twenty sculptures made from local larch.

The two trails have different focuses: for the “Tròi dli Tradizion,” its easy rating and starting point in Dosoledo provide practical guidance; for the “Tròi dli mascri,” the Carnival theme and approximate number of sculptures define the route. The stage from Auronzo di Cadore to Candide also reaches Dosoledo via the “troi di mistieri,” where wooden sculptures recall historic occupations. Before setting out, it is a good idea to check the routes of the four themed Troi trails locally.

Architectural History: Barns, Church and Palazzo

At the edge of the village stands a long row of preserved wooden barns. They recall the historic architecture and former way of life of the mountain population. The Church of Saints Rocco and Osvaldo is the first Neoclassical church in Comelico; Giuseppe Segusini developed its design between 1839 and 1844. The church houses a pearwood altar by Andrea Brustolon, dating from 1722–1723 and dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. These details therefore point to different periods in the history of the building and its artwork.

Palazzo Zandonella offers a different architectural accent: its monumental entrance portal is made of dark tuff, while the window surrounds are made of yellow tuff. An eagle coat of arms appears on the façade. At the church, by contrast, the defining features are its artwork and Neoclassical development. Its entrance has steps, making the church difficult to access for people with disabilities. Check accessibility before your visit.

Ladin Culture and the Annual Calendar

Algudnei is a cultural project that shares research findings about the local area and the Ladin culture of Comelico. The Museo Algudnei is located in Dosoledo, Comelico Superiore. Dosoledo’s annual “maskarada” offers another cultural point of interest for planning a trip: it takes place on the Sunday closest to 9 February, the feast day of Saint Apollonia. The traditional masks “lachè,” “matazin,” “matazera” and “vecia” appear in the procession. If you would like to plan your trip around the “maskarada,” check the specific date of the event for your chosen year.
