There are several distinct starting points for a trip to Pieve D'alpago: archaeological traces at Pian de la Gnela, the parish church of Madonna del Rosario, Villa Falìn and Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7. The topics span everything from a find dating to the period before Christ to a historical event in 1340 and a five-day hiking route. You can tailor your stay to your interests in history, art or a multi-day hike.

Churches and architectural history

Construction of the parish church of Madonna del Rosario in Pieve D'alpago began in 1185; the rebuilt church was completed by 1879. A painting by Gaspare Diziani is located above the right side door. The building's history and the painting offer two distinct ways to explore this church: the dates mark its construction and reconstruction, while the location above the side door identifies the artwork precisely.

Villa Falìn offers a different historical perspective. It was built in the 17th century and remodelled in later centuries. It is also the only Venetian villa in Alpago. Its construction period and subsequent changes are connected, but do not describe just one phase of its history. In comparison with the dates relating to the church, this reveals another aspect of Pieve D'alpago's architectural history.

Archaeology and historical periods

A bronze situla recovered in 2002 at Pian de la Gnela is dated to between the late 6th and early 5th century BC. Another chapter in the area's history is the investiture of Giacoma da Vivaro: on October 30, 1340, Pieve D'alpago was the setting for this unique event. The two dates represent different historical points of reference—a proposed dating for an archaeological find and a precisely dated medieval event.

The location of the Pian de la Gnela necropolis can also be identified precisely. It lies on a terrace at an altitude of 900 to 925 metres. The terrace slopes down from Monte Dolada in a south-easterly direction towards the Torrente Tesa. The altitude and the direction described add a specific topographical context to the archaeological perspective.

Hiking and an annual festival

Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 7 starts at Rifugio Dolomieu al Dolàda in Pieve D'alpago and can be hiked in five days. These five days provide a guide for planning your trip; individual walking times and conditions may vary. So if you include the route in your trip, take into account your own time requirements and the conditions during your planned travel dates.

The Sagra di Sant’Anna, held every year, is a recurring event in the town centre. Its programme dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your preferred travel period. Pieve D'alpago thus offers both a one-time historical date and an annual festival as distinct points of reference in time.
