Fonzaso between the historic center and mountain trails

Fonzaso can be explored from different perspectives: along paths through the historic center, from viewpoints, and through its historic landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel in Fonzaso, you can plan your stay around whether hiking, a multi-day route, or culture and landscape are your priorities. The destinations below offer specific ideas to help you plan.

Views from Covolo and climbing

The Covolo di San Michele is located at an elevation of about 550 m in an open, commanding position overlooking the Fonzaso basin. The site includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael and a statue of the Virgin Mary in an artificially created niche. The views and religious structures are part of the same visit: you can combine views across the basin with a visit to the chapel and statue.

The Falesia di Fonzaso offers a different perspective. It has about 40 technical climbing routes on edges and in pockets. The approach follows the signs to the Eremo di San Micèl and takes approximately 20 minutes. Route details and approach conditions may change; check them before your visit. This gives you both an idea of the climbing and an approximate approach time to bear in mind when planning.

Hiking routes of varying lengths

The route to Campon d’Avena begins at the parking lot behind Fonzaso Town Hall. It first passes through the historic center, along Via Mezzaterra and Via Calzen, and then follows the old Galina mule track. At Cima Loreto, the route opens up to views over the Cismon Valley and the Monte Grappa massif. The sections described give the hike a clear sequence: from the historic center along the old mule track to the viewpoint. Since trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.

The Cammino Retico is a different undertaking: the trail can be completed in seven days, is about 170 km long, and passes through ten municipalities in Veneto and Trentino. It also runs through the historic centers of Fonzaso, Arsiè, Seren del Grappa, Cesiomaggiore, Feltre and Pedavena. This makes it a multi-day route through several municipalities, in contrast to the route to Campon d’Avena. The distance and duration are approximate guides; the route may be updated by its operator. So check the latest route information before planning a multi-day trip.

History and cultural landscape

Fonzaso’s history extends beyond individual buildings. The Roman Via Paolina, a branch of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, ran through the area of Fonzaso. In the main town, Villa De Pantz is one of the most significant surviving architectural landmarks from the town’s heyday in the 18th century. These two examples point to different historical periods: a Roman road through the area and a building from the town’s later heyday.

Winegrowing is also part of the region’s character. It is a longstanding tradition in the Fonzaso area that continues to this day. Together with the historic routes and buildings, it offers another way to experience the area’s history and landscape. If you are interested in cultural heritage, the Via Paolina and Villa De Pantz can enrich your explorations; for a connection to the landscape, consider the vineyards and the views from Covolo, among other things.

Connections and choosing where to stay

The SS 50 del Grappa e di Passo Rolle connects Fonzaso westward with Primiero and eastward with Feltre and Belluno. Feltre is 9 km away and Belluno is 40 km away. These connections and distances help you understand Fonzaso’s location in relation to the places mentioned.
