Sappada offers several starting points for planning your trip: different types of hiking, a cross-country ski trail through the valley, alpine scenery and a distinctive cultural history. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay more on outdoor activities or on architecture, museums and local history.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Scenery

Trekking ranges from easy valley walks and comfortable forest paths to nature trails and more challenging high-altitude tours. This gives you different ways to explore the area: a walk in the valley is a different undertaking from a high-altitude tour. Nature trails are also part of the offer.

One specifically named route leads from Sappada 2000 via trail 315 to the Laghi d’Olbe and is rated easy. The cross-country ski trail, by contrast, is a 15-kilometre circuit through the entire valley. For the route to the Laghi d’Olbe, the destination and trail number are specified; for the ski trail, the focus is on its circuit and route through the valley.

The high valley of Val Sesis stretches along the foot of Monte Peralba, a symbolic 2,694-metre peak in the Carnic Alps. The famous sources of the Piave are also in Val Sesis. The valley, peak and springs provide clear landmarks if you want to discover Sappada primarily through its alpine surroundings.

Language, Architecture and Museums

Sappada is considered a German-speaking language island. In Sappada Vecchia, historic wooden houses shape the townscape; they were built using traditional log construction. This method involves joining layers of timber to form walls. The houses offer a tangible way to explore local architecture, while language and history reveal further aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.

The Giuseppe Fontana Ethnographic Museum in Cima Sappada takes visitors on a tour from the natural environment to the identity of the local community. Its themes include the geology, flora and fauna of the Sappada Valley. A historical section covers the origins and history of Sappada’s population through to the present day. The range of topics thus extends from the valley’s natural environment to the development of its community.

The Casa Museo della Civiltà Contadina Puicher s’Kottlars haus/schtol is located in Borgata Cretta. The simple dwelling has an attached stable and hayloft and dates from the second quarter of the 19th century. It offers a different focus from the ethnographic museum: here, the emphasis is on the form of a historic dwelling and its attached building.

Traditions and Other Experiences

Plodar Vosenòcht, Sappada’s carnival, involves the entire town and takes place over three Sundays. If you are considering the carnival as a reason for your trip, check the specific event dates.

The Piccolo Museo della Grande Guerra preserves an extensive collection of finds and memorabilia from both opposing sides in the First World War. It complements the themes of local history and everyday culture with a collection related to the events of the war.

Nevelandia is a snow and play park for families. Its operating details may vary by season. Tastings are another way to discover Sappada’s local culture: at the Casa dell’Antica Civiltà Contadina, cheeses, sausages and air-dried meats produced in Sappada are sampled with expert explanations. Seasonal planning may change.
