Nevegal: Landscape and activities
Accommodation in Nevegal
Nevegal offers travelers a range of themes to explore: karst landscapes and alpine wildlife, a botanical trail, cycling routes, winter sports and a pilgrimage sanctuary. If you’re looking for a hotel in Nevegal, it helps to match these highlights to the purpose of your trip. Alpe del Nevegal is a high plateau on the northern slope of the Col Visentin range. The ridge separates the Po-Venetian plain from the Val Belluna.
Karst landscapes and alpine wildlife
The Monte Faverghera nature reserve features karst formations such as sinkholes, caves, shafts and karren fields. These terms refer to different forms of karst: sinkholes form depressions, caves and shafts describe cavities, and karren fields are areas of sculpted rock. The landscape description therefore covers several typical karst features, not just one. The wildlife also has a distinctly alpine character. The reserve is home to species including capercaillie, hazel grouse, rock partridge and black woodpecker. If you take both the landscape and wildlife into account when planning your trip, you can explore Monte Faverghera from two perspectives: its karst formations and the species found there.
On foot and in the botanical garden
The Monte Faverghera nature reserve can be reached on foot via trails from Piazzale del Nevegal. As trail conditions can vary by season, check them before setting out. The Giardino Botanico delle Alpi Orientali is a state nature reserve managed by the Reparto Carabinieri BiodiversitĂ di Belluno. The botanical trail is easy, about 2,000 meters long and takes approximately two hours. This gives you a quick overview of the difficulty, distance and time required for this specific trail. Guided tours are available by prior reservation; opening during the season may vary. If you plan to join a guided tour, book in advance and check what is currently available.
Cycling routes and winter sports
Almost 100 kilometers of trekking and mountain biking trails on Alpe del Nevegal lead to the surrounding peaks. Two specific routes differ in activity, course and length: the Belluno–Nevegal cycling route runs from Piazza dei Martiri in Belluno to Nevegal and covers 12.7 kilometers; the Monte Faverghera–Col Visentin mountain biking route starts at Piazzale del Nevegal and runs for 14 kilometers to Col Visentin.
At the Nevegal ski area, the Coca Bassa slope offers night skiing. As this is a seasonal offering, check the latest opening information before your trip. The Nevegal information point provides maps for trekking and cycling routes and sells ski passes in winter. Check the current service information before you arrive.
A pilgrimage sanctuary on NevegĂ l
The Santuario Maria Immacolata “Nostra Signora di Lourdes” is a pilgrimage sanctuary on Nevegà l hill, at an altitude of 1,000 meters. Its religious function offers a different reason to visit than the nature and sports activities described above, and may also influence your choice of destination.
