Seren del Grappa: Culture and Trails on Monte Grappa
Accommodation in Seren del Grappa
Seren del Grappa brings together reminders of the First World War, sacred art and a mountainous landscape that can be explored along a variety of trails. In the Valle di Seren, historic traces meet a landscape of forests, springs and the remains of old settlements. When choosing your destination, you can therefore take both cultural history and nature into account.
Art, history and rural life
The Museo Fotografico della Grande Guerra “Eugenio Secco” contains 170 reproductions of historical photographs. They document events from the First World War in the Feltrino area and the Massiccio del Grappa. To arrange a visit, you can contact the municipal library in the same building. The municipal library is open on Wednesdays from 09:00 to 12:00 and on Fridays from 14:00 to 18:00.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena also preserves an important work of art: the main altar features an altarpiece from 1504 by Jacopo da Valenza, who was active from 1485 to 1509. Painted in oil on canvas, it depicts the Madonna and Child, as well as John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene. It is set in a carved, gilded wooden frame.
The Fojaroi are among the traces of traditional life at higher elevations. These buildings served as summer dwellings, shelter for shepherds and animals, and places for making cheese. Only a few remain in the Valle di Seren on the northern side of the Massiccio del Grappa; some can be visited. The museum in Borgo Sagrilot offers further insight into local economic and everyday life, covering haymaking, keeping livestock in barns and wine production.
The Sentiero Bosco degli Eroi connects physical traces of the First World War with sculptures, poems, works of art and stories. There is also a cross on the summit of Monte Pertica in memory of the victims of the conflict.
Springs, forest and glacial traces
Above Seren del Grappa is the spring known as Acqua della Salute, fed by Valscura and Peùrna. The mixed forest described for the Valle di Seren includes silver firs, Norway spruces, deciduous trees and beeches. The landscape thus ranges from a named spring to varied woodland.
The Conca delle Bocchette is a glacial cirque formed during the last Quaternary glaciation, around 130,000 to 10,000 years ago. The landscape includes diverse vegetation, traces of former settlements and rustic buildings. In addition to its trails, the area therefore has a geological and settlement-history dimension.
Trails and excursions in the area
The Valle di Seren is a starting point for walks and excursions. The Alta Via 8, also known as the Alta Via degli Eroi, runs along the ridges surrounding the valley. Several trails also start at the car park by Acqua della Salute, including the climb to Cima Sassumà. These options offer different ways to explore the area on foot; not all the trails follow the same route or lead to the same destination.
One specific circular route is the Anello M.te Salarol – da Valpore. It starts and ends at the car park near the Aula Verde Valpore and takes about four hours; the duration may vary depending on conditions. Part of the route follows the Alta Via degli Eroi. Along the way, you can choose between old First World War trenches and an easier trail below the ridge. This loop therefore offers both historic traces and an alternative route.
The Sentiero Bosco degli Eroi can be reached from Seren del Grappa via the road to Cima Grappa. At the level of the Albergo Forcelletto, a turn-off leads to the Rifugio Bocchette. The Rifugio Bocchette is a mountain hut at an altitude of 1,300 metres on the northern side, at the foot of Monte Grappa. Check current trail and road conditions before setting out.
Another route leads to the Conca delle Bocchette: the relevant section of the Anello naturalistico del Grappa starts at the Rifugio Bocchette di Mezzo, which can be reached from Seren del Grappa. The Centro didattico Valpore is open from May to October; check the specific opening hours before visiting. This makes it possible to take nature, history and seasonal visitor attractions into account when planning your stay.
