Misurina between lake and mountains

Misurina lies at an altitude of 1,756 metres in an area shaped by mountains and green forests. The small natural Lake Misurina defines the town; the surrounding peaks are reflected on its surface. The Cadini, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Cristallo and the Sorapis massif are reflected in the water. A path runs along the shore and makes it possible to walk around the lake. This combines views of distinctive peaks with a circuit in which the lake itself is the focal point. This is a different kind of outing from a hike with a mountain hut as its destination: here, the shore and water’s surface shape the walk, while hikes in the mountains head for their own destinations.

Mountain views and hikes at Col de Varda

The two-seat Col de Varda chairlift connects Misurina, at 1,756 metres, with Rifugio Col de Varda, at 2,106 metres; the ride takes about ten minutes. From the mountain hut, there are views of Lake Misurina and the surrounding mountains, including Cristallo, the Sexten Dolomites, the Cadini, Sorapiss and the Tofane. The mountain hut is also a starting point for numerous hikes into the Cadini di Misurina. The destinations mentioned include Rifugio Fonda Savio and Rifugio Città di Carpi. A stay at Col de Varda can therefore be tailored in different ways: to enjoy the view from the mountain hut or to hike into the Cadini, with the named mountain huts as destinations.

Snow and summer by the lake

The Misurina ski area includes an easy slope suitable for learning to ski. Campo scuola Loita has two cross-country ski trails. The slope and trails offer different snow activities: the slope is geared towards beginners learning to ski, while the trails are for cross-country skiing. A rowboat ride on Lake Misurina is also a summer experience. Before your trip, check whether and in what form this ride is available during your travel dates.

A place of remembrance and church history

Monte Piana is a place of remembrance of the First World War and is home to a historical open-air museum dedicated to the war. Another historical connection is found at the Chiesa della Madonna della Salute: Don Antonio Da Rin consecrated the church in August 1900. Queen Margherita of Savoy attended a Mass there in honour of her husband, who had been killed in July of the same year. The sequence of July and August anchors this episode in a specific moment in 1900. The commemoration of the First World War and the dated church history thus stand alongside one another as distinct historical themes.
