Colle Santa Lucia between cultural heritage and mountain trails
Accommodation in Colle Santa Lucia
You can plan a visit to Colle Santa Lucia around two specific themes: the traces of local history and trails through the mountain landscape. From here, enjoy panoramic views across Val Fiorentina, with Pelmo and Civetta in the background. Passo Giau and the Strada de la Vena also serve as points of reference for hiking and mining history. If you are looking for a hotel in Colle Santa Lucia, you can use the sights and trail options you want to include in your stay as a guide when planning your trip.
Mountain views, pass and getting there
The eastern half of Passo Giau lies within the municipality of Colle Santa Lucia. Hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists use the pass. The view across Val Fiorentina from the village offers a different way to experience the landscape, with Pelmo and Civetta standing out in the background. This gives you two distinct points of reference for planning: a named pass and a specific viewpoint.
You can reach Colle Santa Lucia by bus from Mestre, Mogliano and Treviso, travelling first as far as Caprile and then continuing with Dolomitibus. Bus connections may change, so check your route before travelling.
Cultural landmarks in Villagrande
The Chiesa di S. Lucia at Via Villagrande 29 houses the Meridiana, a fresco sundial dating from 1606. Another building, Casa Piazza, is on the main street in the historic centre of Villagrande in Colle Santa Lucia. It can be recognised by a round arch that allows a packhorse trail to pass through.
Cesa de Jan was built by the Chizzali brothers between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The year 1612 is inscribed above its entrance. The building houses permanent exhibitions on the history, customs and traditions of the Colle area. The sundial, round arch and exhibitions offer different insights: into a dated work of art, an architectural feature and the area’s history.
Strada de la Vena and mining history
The suggested section of the Strada de la Vena runs between Colle Santa Lucia and Castello di Andraz. In the easternmost section near Maso di Troi, you can see the remains of old mines and a restored mine entrance. You can go a few dozen metres into the entrance; the approach is somewhat steep. A higher historic route of the Strada de la Vena leads to Pianaz and takes five to six hours to walk. These descriptions differ both in the route covered and the stated time required.
Miniera dei Vauz dates from the 17th century and is located in the Miniere del Fursil area. A minibus takes visitors to the entrance, after which a guide accompanies them on a short visit inside the mine. The 2026 programme lists visits. Check dates and seasonal availability before travelling. The iron ore extracted from the Miniere del Fursil is also part of the area’s mining history: it was valuable and suitable for making weapons.
Trail options by starting point and length
On the Alta Via dell’Orso, the orange route starts in the historic centre of Colle Santa Lucia, while the green route starts at Rifugio Fedare on Passo Giau. CAI trail 463 runs from Colle Santa Lucia to Rifugio Fedare and is 7.5 kilometres long. The higher historic route of the Strada de la Vena is listed as taking five to six hours to walk; the other trails are described by their starting point or endpoints and, in the case of the CAI trail, by their length. This lets you assess the available information in light of your plans without treating different route details as equivalent. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
