Salce: Churches, Villas and Architectural History
Accommodation in Salce
For travelers who choose a destination based on architectural and church history, Salce offers several clearly dated points of interest. Chapels, churches and villas represent different periods and architectural histories. There is also a local culinary connection: a bakery focused on traditional craftsmanship.
Churches, Chapels and Villas
In Col di Salce, a chapel dedicated to the Apostle San Bartolomeo stood on the site of today’s parish church from 1346. In 1605, the old chapel was enlarged to its current size and form. These two dates mark an early chapter in the area’s history and the chapel’s later transformation. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo in Salce also houses a wooden statue of the Addolorata by Valentino Panciera Besarel. Alongside the history of the religious building, this adds a specific work of art, whose material, subject and artist are named.
At Villa Giamosa, the architectural traces reach further back than the history of the present-day building. Elements in its foundations and cellar rooms point to an earlier structure from the 15th century. This probably belonged to one of the castles that Venice ordered demolished in 1421. This probable attribution links the architectural detail to the history of the 15th century. At the corner of the walled grounds, the villa also has a Baroque chapel with a double octagonal floor plan. This gives the chapel a precise geometric feature in addition to identifying its period. Villa Zaglio in Col di Salce dates from the 17th century; the Oratorio della Beata Vergine Annunciata in Salce dates from the 18th century. Together, these buildings represent different historical periods rather than a single era.
The Chiesa di San Pietro a Salce offers another sequence of construction phases. The year 1579 is carved in stone above the main portal. The church was demolished in 1812 because it had fallen into disrepair and rebuilt in 1833, retaining its original stone entrance portal. In 1877, after the necessary work had been completed, it reopened for worship. The date, demolition, rebuilding and reopening thus mark different stages in its history.
The traditional Sagra di San Bartolomeo is part of the events calendar. In 2025, it was held on August 22, 23 and 24 at the sports field in Salce (Belluno), organized by the Associazione Sole Luna Volley Salce. Cycling in the Regional Context
In the wider Valbelluna area, the Anello della Valbelluna is an approximately 80-kilometer cycling route connecting Belluno and Feltre. The route follows cycle paths and country roads. It is described as suitable for less experienced cyclists and families, as well as for rides on e-bikes. The route offers a regional perspective on cycling, while Salce’s churches and villas provide the focus on architectural and cultural history. Its length, connection between the two cities and road surfaces give the route description specific detail; its suitability should be understood as a characterization of the route.
