Domegge di Cadore lies on the right-hand side of the upper Piave Valley and on the shores of Lago Centro Cadore. The surroundings of the lake are framed by the Spalti di Toro. Two main themes feature in information about the area: trails with varying difficulty levels and estimated times, and churches, chapels and works of art from different centuries.

Hiking trails and places to visit

The CAI section of Domegge di Cadore maintains 16 trails with a total length of 50 kilometres. The local hiking options include various difficulty levels, including the Alta Via No. 6. Easier walks in the area include a trail by the lake and the Pian dei Buoi plateau.

Route No. 1 takes 30 minutes from Piazza dei Martiri in Domegge, via Vallesella, to the bridge over the lake. Route No. 2 is an easy trail from Vallesella via Pignola to the MolinĂ  chapel. Another option is Route No. 5: this 1.5-hour circular route through natural surroundings passes through Talagona and follows the lakeshore on the way back.

From the square in Domegge, Route No. 7 reaches Rifugio CercenĂ  in one hour and Rifugio Padova in two hours. The route information thus gives several timeframes and destinations. The Vallesella climbing crag along Route No. 1 also offers climbing routes of varying difficulty levels and a short via ferrata.

Eremo dei Romiti and trails in the surrounding area

Eremo dei Romiti is a monastery built in 1720; the adjoining church was built in 1724. The Eremo is a destination for short outings and a starting point for trails to Col Cros, Montanel and towards the Spalti di Toro. Every year on 24 June, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, Mass is celebrated in the small chapel at the Eremo.

Churches, history and art

The parish church of San Giorgio in Domegge was built between 1861 and 1865 and consecrated on 20 April 1933. Bargellini painted frescoes in the dome and choir in 1930. The church also contains a painting attributed to Marco Vecellio: “Madonna and Child Enthroned between Saint Apollonia and Saint Lucy”.

The church of San Rocco houses the painting “Madonna and Child Enthroned between Saints Roch and Sebastian”, attributed to Francesco Vecellio. The church of Madonna della Neve (S. Antonio) in Val di Croce was built in 1508 on the then-road to Lozzo and consecrated in 1659.

The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie – Valesella was built between 1510 and 1515. Nicolò Ruopèl built it as a votive church after the 1509 Battle of Vallesella against the troops of Maximilian I of Habsburg. An attached cell, formerly inhabited by a hermit, is considered the only surviving example of its kind in Cadore.

A local speciality

La Cartufola’s main product is an artisan-made preserve of thin slices of Jerusalem artichoke in oil, prepared according to an old local recipe. La Cartufola’s specialities are still on the menu at Antica Hostaria Serenissima, where they can be sampled. Visitors can also buy and collect La Cartufola products at the Hostaria.
