In Lamon, experiences range from frescoes and archaeological evidence to hiking trails and nature watching along La Senaiga.

Culture and history

The parish church of San Pietro preserves frescoes dating from 1560 to 1570, attributed to Marco Da Mel. Another historical period takes centre stage at the San Donato necropolis: it contains around 70 graves and was in use from the mid-1st century AD to the 4th century AD.

The Museo Civico Archeologico e la necropoli di San Donato is near Lamon’s square and preserves finds from archaeological excavations carried out between 2000 and 2009 in Piasentot near San Donato. The museum has set opening hours in summer; outside the summer season, visits are possible by prior reservation. Check the seasonal arrangements before your trip.

Il Ponte Romano consists of a single span of local stone supported by a round arch. Its clearly identifiable design adds to the frescoes and archaeological evidence: a single stone span and its supporting round arch.

Trails and places to visit

The Arina, Chiappini, Toffoli hiking trail has two consecutive stages: from the church of Arina, you reach the hamlet of Piloni after around 30 minutes; a further 15 minutes or so takes you past Col Sec to the hamlet of Chiappini. The times are approximate and depend on walking conditions.

The Anello Sala-Pezzè circular trail is 5.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 320 metres. It is suitable for children and can be walked with animals. The two sets of route information answer different planning questions: for the Anello, the focus is on distance and elevation gain, while for the trail from Arina, it is the approximate time to reach the named hamlets.

The Lamon Gran Tour is a circular route with impressive views over the valley; its final section follows part of the imperial Via Claudia Augusta. Val Senaiga Canyon is located in San Donato di Lamon (BL).

The landscape around La Senaiga

La Senaiga is a 62-metre-high double-arch dam, built between 1949 and 1951 in the territory of Lamon, on the border with the Province of Trento. A suspended footbridge crosses the lake, offering impressive panoramic views. Numerous mallards and grey herons can be observed on Lake La Senaiga and in its immediate surroundings.

Monte Coppolo is considered a natural continuation of the Vette Feltrine and a biodiversity protection area. Its ascent is considered difficult and offers impressive panoramic views. This assessment of difficulty distinguishes it from the specific measured details for the Anello Sala-Pezzè; for the trails from Arina, approximate walking times are given instead.

Local traditions

The Lamon breed of sheep is a native population from the area of the same name in the Province of Belluno. Its distribution can change over time; it is found mainly in the municipality of Lamon and in a few other municipalities in Valbelluna.

The Festa del fagiolo di Lamon takes place every year on the third weekend of September and lasts three days. It offers the opportunity to sample local specialities such as smoked mutton; it also includes an extensive programme to discover and share the region’s cultural and traditional heritage. If you are planning your trip around it, check the specific event dates for your travel year.
