Borca di Cadore is a mountain village in the Boite Valley in the province of Belluno. Trails through forests and meadows, the architecture of Villaggio Eni and local traditions offer different ways to enjoy a stay. Seasonal leisure activities also add their own character, depending on when you visit.

Trails through forests, meadows and panoramic landscapes

The walk to Cascata di Borca begins in Borca, crosses a bridge over the Boite and then follows a forest track through a fir forest. There is a picnic area with facilities at the waterfall. Since facilities may change, it is advisable to check shortly before your visit.

Another route description concerns Trail No. 468: from Borca di Cadore/Serdes, it climbs gently westwards to the meadows around Taulà de Tiera at 1,271 m. At Forcella Forada, Trail No. 468, coming from Tièra, meets Trail No. 480. Forcella Forada offers very wide-ranging views. Rifugio Città di Fiume is a stopping point on Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 1.

Architecture and built heritage

Villaggio Eni in Borca di Cadore was designed by Edoardo Gellner; its construction is dated from 1954 to 1962. The church of Nostra Signora del Cadore in Villaggio Eni has exposed concrete exterior walls, a steeply pitched gable roof and a bell tower topped with a steel spire. A gable roof consists of two sloping roof surfaces that meet at the ridge. This makes it possible to identify the roof shape without technical terminology.

The Lunga Via delle Dolomiti follows the route of the former Dolomites railway. Original railway stations, tunnels and bridges have been preserved. These structures are part of the route’s historic character, as is its alignment along the former railway line.

Culture and traditions

Ladin is still spoken in Borca di Cadore. The language has its roots in the vernacular Latin language and is a strong symbol of identity. The parish church of Saints Simon and Thaddeus also houses a G. Callido organ dating from 1791.

The feast of Saint Anne, the village’s patron saint, is celebrated every July with religious services, music, traditional games and local dishes. These include polenta with pastin and apple fritters. If you are planning to visit for the feast, check the specific dates locally.

Activities in different seasons

Happy Park offers a play area with facilities including slides, swings, wooden play equipment and seesaws. There is also a small pump track and cycling track for bicycles and mountain bikes. Some facilities may change; check which activities are currently available before your visit.

Every winter, a 3 km cross-country ski loop is groomed in Villanova. The loop starts just a few minutes from the town centre; grooming depends on winter conditions. A natural ice rink opens every winter, weather permitting.

The seasons for visiting differ considerably: the feast of Saint Anne takes place in July, while cross-country skiing and the natural ice rink are winter activities. Grooming of the loop depends on winter conditions, while the weather determines whether the natural ice rink opens.
