San Gregorio nelle Alpi offers several ways to plan a stay: trails of varying difficulty, historical landmarks and seasonal events. Which of these takes priority for you depends on whether you want to spend time hiking, explore local history or time your visit to coincide with a particular festival.

Hiking and Trails

The Heart’s Path starts in the forecourt of the San Gregorio nelle Alpi sports ground and runs around the village centre of Roncoi at the foot of Monte Pizzocco. Along the way, you’ll pass prehistoric fortifications, routes used by the Romans and ancient watchtowers. Near Maserolle, you can take a detour to the Via dell’Acqua along the Torrente Veses. This means you can follow the route with or without this additional detour.

When it comes to the trail to Rifugio Casèra Ere, it is important to distinguish between the levels of difficulty: the path to the refuge is not demanding, but experienced hikers are required for the slopes above it. The climb to Monte Pizzocco offers exceptional panoramic views and requires good physical fitness. These are different considerations when choosing a hike: the assessment of the path to the refuge does not automatically apply to the slopes above it, and the climb to Monte Pizzocco has an explicitly stated physical requirement.

History, Archaeology and Craftsmanship

The Via Claudia Augusta Altinate crossed the area of San Gregorio nelle Alpi. As an important route across the Alps, it gives the town’s history a connection to historic travel and trade that differs from the themes of the hiking trails.

The church of San Lucano houses an early medieval pluteus with early Christian depictions, as well as valuable altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church was rebuilt in 1701 in a more central location. The artworks span different periods: the pluteus dates to the early Middle Ages, while the altarpieces come from two much later centuries.

Castel de Pedena offers a different perspective on the past: this high-altitude protohistoric site is dated to between the Early Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, with the Early Iron Age specified as the 9th century BC. The structural and domestic remains discovered there are important to understanding the history of settlement. These traces of early habitation stand alongside the church’s later artworks, though the two do not cover the same periods.

The Museo delle Zoche e della Tarsia has a collection of roots from centuries-old trees, as well as wood inlays made by local sculptors. The collection draws attention to different forms of working with wood: from the roots of old trees to finely crafted inlays. Please contact the museum by phone or email in advance of your visit.

Seasonal Events

A market for organic farming takes place in the hamlet of Paderno on the last weekend of July. Strawberries and organically grown mountain berries are the main attractions. In Roncoi, the Festa della smonticazione is celebrated on the last weekend of September, marking the return of livestock from the mountain pastures. The two events have different focuses: the market showcases agricultural produce, while the festival celebrates the return of livestock from the mountain pastures.

If you want to plan your trip around one of these weekends, check the exact event date before making arrangements. The July date is associated with the market in Paderno, and the September date with the festival in Roncoi. This lets you include the seasonal events in your stay deliberately, without confusing them with year-round interests such as hiking, archaeology and art.
